Rome-Amalfi Coast-Florence-Tuscany Itinerary

Is this too aggressive of an itinerary for 12 nights?

2 nights Florence
3 nights Tuscany
3 nights Rome
4 nights Amalfi Coast

Depends on where you are flying into and out of. Especially the latter. If you are staying on the AC, but flying home from Naples or Rome, you need to be in that city the night before departure, unless your flight is very late in the day. If flying home from Rome, I'd put all your Rome days last. It's aggressive, but some people like just a quick sample of different places.

Flying in and out of Rome. Was planning on flying into Rome but hopping on train to Florence and doing first two nights of trip in Florence and last 3 nights in Rome.

Hello matthewflanagan4, and welcome to the forum,

As usual I think if you have to ask if you're doing too much then you are. Keeping in mind that 2 nights is only one full day somewhere you will have one jet lagged day in Florence before moving on under this plan. Off the top of my head I think you need to lose either Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast and put those days into Florence so you have at least a couple of nights there if you have any interest in seeing the famous museums and art in the city.

4 nights Florence - side trips to Siena of other Tuscany destination
4 nights AC
4 nights Rome
or
4 nights Florence
4 nights Tuscany
4 nights Rome

Makes more sense to me. I don't think 12 nights is enough for 4 full destinations unless they are close and you really want the "sampler platter" overview. But you can do 3 or 3.5 places in that time. Planning is always a struggle between your list and your time,

My $.02, have a great trip,

hey hey matthewflanagan4
welcome aboard the forum
when is this trip and how many people? where are you flying in from USA/Canada. are your 12 nights total on ground or day 1 fly in day 12 fly out leaving you 10 days ground, renting a car will need a mandatory IDP (aaa.com/IDP).
know the time your flight arrives, going thru passport/immigration, getting bags, time on train for next stop. florence is a couple hours away, (trenitalia.com) from FCO or roma termini. tuscany is a big area not a town, what town are you planning to stay?
check-in hotel 3-4pm check-out hotel 10-11am which 2 nights gives you half evening night, full day then check out.
your places you have picked are always mentioned here on everyone's bucket list, they will be busy all year, not an off season anymore with so many travelers and "overtourism" in many european big cities. just be prepared for crowds. agree with CJean with flying home, if amalfi coast fly from naples, if rome end of trip fly home rome no backtracking
go with the flow have fun and enjoy

Hi, take a look at your transportation time. You can find the train times on Trenitalia.com for the cities you’re considering. I feel like Florence is going to seem like a blur, if you’re flying into Rome and immediately taking the train up to Florence. It’s an arrival day & a jet lag day, and you’re moving onward.

I don’t feel like it’s too aggressive, depending on what you’re planning to cover on the Amalfi Coast.

2 nights Florence
3 nights Tuscany
4 nights Amalfi Coast
3 nights Rome

Florence is in Tuscany. Where else in Tuscany do you have in mind?

Getting to/from an Amalfi Coast town is a slow process and likely to consume more of a day than you might expect.

Have you been to Italy before?

It may be more efficient to do 4 nights in Florence, and do a day trip from there and add one more night to Rome.

What time of year is the trip?

What is the focus of what you want to see & do?

Sorry for confusion around Florence/Tuscany. Meant 2 nights in the city of Florence and then 3 nights somewhere in the Tuscany area so I could see Pisa and maybe spend some time on the coast in that region. Would like to incorporate some beach time into this trip and was hoping to go to the beach in Amalfi Coast but hearing mixed things about the beaches there. Will be flying in and out of Rome so wanted to end the trip in Rome if possible.

Imo, you could spend 5 nights in Florence, doing day trips to other places in Tuscany. That would save you the time lost to changing hotels. Also, 2 nights = 1.5 days at best. Very little time for such a world class destination. 4 nights for the Amalfi Coast is a lot. It’s stunningly beautiful; but, depending on where you live and where you’ve been, you might find the beaches disappointing. Be sure to put Rome at the end of your trip, assuming that’s where you’ll fly out from. I would never, never, a thousand times never, spend my last night anywhere but in the city of my departure flight.

I'm not sure that limiting your Tuscany time, with all of its charming towns, to log in beach time, would be time well spent. Especially since you are already spending so much time on the AC. And I'm not sure what kind of beach experience you are hoping for . It certainly won't be anything like Florida or SoCal beaches. You can certainly visit Siena, Pisa and Lucca as day trips from Florence, as well as other Tuscan towns. That will maximize your sightseeing and reduce the time wasted by changing locations and hotels.

I'm thinking doing Florence/Tuscany area may be too much. Top things we are looking to do are the coliseum in Rome and a visit to Pompei. Anybody have any experience with Ischia? We are looking to fit in some beach time on this trip so that was suggested to me.

4 nights each in Rome, Ischia, and Amalfi coast?

Hi Matthew, I think if you want to go to a place, then go, and assess whether you would want to go back. For example, I have been to Italy many times, including a single trip for 10 weeks in Rome, during which time we spent one weekend in Florence. That was enough, we have never felt like going back. Maybe since I don't like museums more than to pop in for the must see items (i.e. Mona Lisa in France). I don't think your itinerary is too aggressive, but Tuscany and Amalfi Coast are harder to get to/from.

Pompeii is doable from AC, and again, maybe you don't need as long as some other people. I did Pompeii in an hour and a half on my way from AC to Naples. That's all the time I had, so I made it work, since it's better than not seeing it at all.
When visiting the AC, you are on the coast and the views are magnificent. I don't place much value in beach time in Europe. Again, depends on what you want. I would choose a boat ride.
Enjoy your trip.

We are close to wrapping up,,,
4 nights Sorrento (1 day Positano/Amalfi, 1 day Capri, 1 day Pompeii)
4 nights Florence (1 day Duomo, 1 day in Tuscany incl Pisa, 1 day Uffizi and Academia and Boboli Gardens
1 day in Bologna just to check out Ducati (had a couple hours to wander, cool city!)
4 nights Venice (1 days Marks and Doges, 1 day Jewish ghetto and Murano, 1 day Canal Tour plus miscellaneous mask shopping and the Fraud church)
1 day in Milan to see the Duomo and Last Supper
3 nights in CT ( staying in Monterosso, hiking and trains)

We head for 4 nights in Rome later today.
Gotta say that we're both pretty beat. No real "days off", and it's been a bit of a blur, albeit one filled with lots of fun sightseeing supplemented by alot of Aperol and gelato!!!

If I were doing this again, I would have selected fewer cities, stayed longer or chosen fewer.things to.do in each, rather than the full boat highlights tour.. Can't say my better half would have agreed at the time, but I think she does.now..

In April...two cousins, my wife and myself did 16 days--Florence (4 nights), Rome (4), Salerno (3) (Amalfi Coast) and Taormina (4) (Sicily). Flew into Florence, out of Catania. All by Trenitalia, we took day trips but we left every last day at a destination free to do whatever or nothing. I think doing that helped us not feel so rushed.

For example, last day in Rome we were walking around the Vittorio Emanuele monument, and decided on the spur of the moment to do a Hop On Hop Off bus for 16 Euro, mostly to rest our feet. We had cold water to drink and it was a nice, sunny day, so we sat up top and really enjoyed ourselves for 2 circuits of the route, finally disembarking at the Spanish Steps. Just a great, impromptu decision. Helped the rest of the trip for us.

I think 4 nights for these main destinations is perfect, 3 is a little rushed. 2...you might as well bypass it. Just my opinion in four trips to Italy.
