We are traveling from Rome Leonardo de Vinci airport and catching the train from Rome to Florence. Should we take the train to Rome Tiburtina or Rome Central? We do not want to make many train changes.
You don't have any choice. The Leonard Express only goes to Termini - nonstop. From there you can take the subway - a couple of stops - to Tiburtina.
There is no Rome Central; the main station is called Termini. The Leonardo Express only goes to Termini, but the local train FR1 goes to Tiburtina (and does not go to Termini). There are two companies that operate trains from Rome to Florence: Trenitalia (the national train company) and Italo (a newer competitor, which gets excellent reviews). If you are catching the Trenitalia train, you would get it at Roma Termini. If you are taking the Italo train, you would get it at Roma Tiburtina. So, first you need to know which train you are taking to Florence, and then you can take a train from the airport to the correct Rome station. Lots more detail about the Leonardo Express is here, from Ron In Rome. In his first paragraph he has a link to information about the FR1: http://www.roninrome.com/transportation/leonardo-express-the-trenitalia-nonstop-train-to-the-fiumicino-fco-airport
I was in a similar situation. I flew to Rome but needed to get to Siena (1 hour or so south of Florence). I took the FR1 to Tiburtina Station. It took about 10 minutes or so longer than the Leonardo Express. The reason I did this was so I could buy my bus ticket to Siena. You see, many bus companies that operate out of Tiburtina Station. A bus might be a good option for you. For Siena the bus took me closer to where I needed to be. If you elect to take the train than you can go to Termini and that is just fine too. Check prices though. The bus might be a better deal.
Jim, The simplest option (and the one I'd use) would be to: > After collecting luggage and going through Passport control, go directly to the FCO rail station. You can see the details on finding the station on the roninrome.com website. > Buy tickets for both the Leonardo Express and for the Freccia train to Florence (the latter will have compulsory reservations). Note that your destination station will be Firenze Santa Maria Novella (often abbreviated as SMN). > Before boarding the Leonardo Express, BE SURE to validate your tickets in the yellow machine. > The trip to Rome will be about 35 minutes. When you arrive at Termini, check the monitors to determine which track your next train will be leaving from. The number of the train will be listed on your tickets and shown on the monitors. > If the train is waiting on the platform, determine where your assigned carriage (Carozza) is, board and find your assigned seats (Posti). BE SURE to verify that the train number matches the one shown on your tickets (ie: ES 9715). > Sit back and enjoy the ~1H:30M trip to Florence at 300 kmH. Happy travels!
