Rome airport to downtown

We arrive at 10:30 am and have heard horror stories about taxis from the airport. Is there a train we can take from the airport? Have had trouble determining this! Thanks!!

The Leonardo Express (train) from the airport to Termini is well documented in all guide books. Check roninrome.com for even more detail. Runs twice an hour for 14€. Have no idea what the horror stories would be since this portion of the Rome taxis is the most regulated. Fixed price of 48€ for four people to the center of Rome. Also can take the bus for 8€ to Termini.

Just be sure to get a taxi from the taxi rank and not from anyone who approaches you, even if they say they are an official. Wait in line for the next taxi and let the driver know you're aware of the fixed rate. You should have no problems. Donna

Thanks Donna, for your kind answer, unlike Frank! I was trying to find the actual route to the train station in the airport to be a bit more prepared when we arrive. Have since found my answers! Thanks so much for responding

Julie, I noticed (in coming through Ciampino airport this evening) that many of the taxis at the airport in the official line now have a magnetic sign on the passenger side door that clearly displays the rates (€30 from Ciampino to within the Aurelian Walls, €48 from Fiumicino to within, etc.). At Fiumicino, near the head of the line of taxis there is a sign prominently displayed that has this information. I was there recently and saw it with my own eyes. I always make it a point to "obviously" look at the sign and mention the rate to the taxi driver before getting in the car. At Ciampino, the sign has been taken down and not yet replaced, but as I said, the cars have magnetic signs on them with the rates. So I would feel pretty safe taking a taxi, and you can't beat the convenience of it either. Remember that tipping is not necessary; you certainly can give a tip if you wish, but they are not expecting anything, and don't make it exhorbitant (e.g. maybe you would round up the €48 to €50 -- but they will be prepared to give you the €2 change, because they are not expecting a tip). Take care and enjoy your trip.

Julie, a taxi would be a better deal if you have four people; otherwise, the Leonardo Express goes from Fumicino airport (FCO) to Termini station in downtown Rome at track #24 - just walk out from the train station and take a cab from there (lines right outside the front door), or just take the taxi from the airport directly to your hotel. Depending on the size of your party and whether you want to change from train to taxi (or bus, but you'd need to know which one to take - there's an information desk outside the train station but it can be chaotic after a long flight), the taxi from the airport might be your best solution.

Julia, just follow the signs to the train. They are in English and there will a steady flow of both locals and tourists taking the train.

Taking the train into Rome is pretty much a no brainer. Follow the herd. REMEMBER to put your ticket into the machine to time stamp it! When I was there, they were yellow. Trains come and go all day. When you board you will see a reason why Rick recommends traveling light... folks trying hard to hoist/lift their 90 lb bags up the steps into the cars! When you get off the train you will have a bit of a walk to get to the main lobby.

Den, if by "a bit of a walk" you mean track #25, the Leonardo Express now comes in at track #24, at the railhead - no quarter-mile dash to the lobby any more.

Just an observation...we took the train in June, and it is easy to follow the signs (and the herd)but...we were VERY glad we had small carry-on-only-sized luggage because at least two of the escalators en route were not functioning (you had to walk them like steps...and there were a lot).
Enjoy your trip!
