Rome airport: Time needed for connections

Will be arriving 13:25 hrs. on a Sunday in May on Alitalia flight from Marseille with checked baggage.
Would like to take train from airport through Rome onto Orvieto.
Noticed that there is a train leaving Rome airport at 13:53 hrs connecting at Termini onto Orvieto arriving at 16:15 hrs.
Next connecting train leaves Rome airport at 14:23 and arrives at Orvieto 18:28 hrs.
Would prefer earlier arrival into Orvieto but don't know how much time it will take to get luggage and go to train terminal at airport.
I assume that if I buy tickets ahead of time I will be stuck with the time I pick or are the tickets flexible in case I miss the earlier time?
Don't want to get stuck at airport.
Hopefully someone has done this and knows how much time is needed for connections.
Thank you for your assistance.

Last September I had the same kind of connection (in my case a »Regionale« to Viterbo). Getting the 13h53 is out of the question, but you should be able to get the 14h23, presuming your plane is on time and there are no luggage problems.
Advance buying your tickets on the trenitalia.com site gives you some extra time in case it's a short connection. The »base« tickets should allow you to use another train without charge. (I assume this has to be done at the ticket window.)

Is there a big price difference to buy ahead? If not, just wait and buy on arrival, then there's minimal waiting and no concern about delays.

I always buy my train tickets ahead of time for everything except the trip from the airport to the first location. There's no need to add stress of worrying about catching a specific train; just buy a ticket when you arrive for the next train.

I think both tickets (FCO-Roma Termini and Roma Termini-Orvieto are regionale, so no need to buy ahead (no discounts for early purchase).

Edit: there is a Freccia Rossa but there are more regionale veloce options. There is also an intercity, but the trip by regionale veloce is not much slower, so I would opt for one less thing to stress over. You can buy both tickets at the station at FCO.
