What is the best and cheapest way to get from the main airport in Rome (Fiumicino Airport) to the main terminal (Termini) train station?
Leonardo Express train: 32 minutes for €14 per person one way.
Bus (Terravision): ~50 min for €6 pp o.w. (Or €4 if booked online)
Angie, as mentioned many times on this website, there really is no such thing as best and cheapest. However here are several options. First, you can take the Leonardo Express from the train terminal just in front of Terminal #3 to Rome Termini. Fare is 14Euro. Second, you can also opt for a taxi. Fares are set by law from the airport into Rome. Fare is about 48Euro. Third, you can take a more local train to the Rome-Tiburtina train station for 8Euro. This train does not stop at Roma-Termini. Last, there is a Terravision bus that runs from the airport to Rome Termini for 4Euro if you buy online.
Angie,
I always prefer the Leonardo Express and while it may not be the cheapest, it's about the quickest and easiest method which I prefer after a long flight. It's not affected by traffic, so the travel time is quite predictable.
One important point to mention - if you decide to take the L.E., BE SURE to validate your tickets prior to boarding the train or you'll likely be fined on the spot and it WON'T be cheap!
Hello, Can a family of 4 take the taxi from airport to termini area for $48 then , or is there a base fee and additional for other people ? Just wondering how taxis work in Rome
Someone asked if a family of four can take a taxi for $48.00. I don't know. But I will say that when I went to buy my ticket for the train at the desk near the train, there were four people traveling ahead of me ( Sept 2013 going on RS Rome tour) and the people selling the tickets told them not to take the train, they could take a shuttle bus that would drop them off at their hotel. The desk people said that the shuttle bus was easier and cheaper than taking the train due to where their hotel was located.
I took the train as it was very easy and my hotel was in walking distance from Termini. Hop on train, from the airport and it only makes on stop and got off and walked to the hotel.
The web site ronInrome.com is a great place to read all about Rome transportation.
I just checked it and YES a family/group of 4 and their luggage can take a fixed rate cab into the city center for the fixed rate of 48 Euro.
If a family of four are going to take a cab from the airport, where does all their luggage go?
There are maxi-cabs in the queue.
Roberto: what is web site to book bus from FCO to Rome? Thanks.
If you use the LE train from the airport and your hotel is not within easy walking distance of Termini, make sure to use the official taxis. The moment you get off the train, there will be numerous aggressive hawksters telling you to "come with me". No. Go outside right in front of the termini to the official taxi queue.
Honestly, after a long flight, I prefer a taxi. It was my wife and 2 kids and it cost me about 50 euros. I rented an apartment in Rome and the owner arranged (at my request) a cab to pick us up. I think it saves on the headache of looking for your place also.
