About two weeks ago we stayed in Fiumicino for the first time and we loved it. Because of the number of people in our party, we stayed at a BNB, but many people raved about about the Hotel Tiber - it just didn’t work for us due to the number in our party.
Fiumicino is a neat place, easily walkable, lots of restaurants, etc. We had a rental car so we just drove to the airport the morning of our flight. I timed it-from the time we left our BNB at the harbor on the south side of the canal/river (left around 7:00), driving into FCO, turning in the rental at SIXT, walking across to the terminal, checking bags (we have Delta priority status) going through security (I did buy Fast Track passes- 21 euro, worth it to us) to our gate was less than 1:20.
In the future, if it is just my husband and me without a car, we will likely book the Hotel Tiber. The hotel has shuttles (check times and fees on their website) to and from FCO.
Staying at the airport has its conveniences but it was so easy and quick to get there from Fiumicino and have a better “last night in Italy.”
Edited to add: I think we ate at Tarumbo - it was a little pricey - airport adjacent$, but the food and staff were good. We literally decided to eat there because of all the places we passed, the aroma there was the best and our son wanted another round of seafood. It did not disappoint.
