Rome Airport Hotel

Has anyone stayed at Hotel Tiber Fiumicino? It is supposed to be newer and has gotten great reviews on Trip Advisor. Myself and two friends will be leaving Catania, Sicily in February at the end of a RS tour and flying back to Rome arriving at 4:00pm. Our flight back to the US the next day is at 8:50am, so we want to stay somewhere close to FCO. Several persons have recommended the Hilton Hotel Rome Airport, which is walkable to the terminals, but the rate is over $300 for three adults! And we will just be there about 12 hours! I can get the Hotel Tiber with airline miles. Just want to know if anyone has stayed there recently and how their shuttle service is.

I just posted this in another, I think incorrect, section of the Travel Forum -- the section for Hotel Reviews--sorry!

Since no one else has replied, I will. I have had no experience with the Hotel Tiber, however, I rely on booking.com for honest hotel reviews. Unlike Trip Advisor, they require a hotel stay to post a review. If Booking says it's OK, just do it, especially after a vacation, and you just want a place to sleep before leaving for an early flight to the U.S. I try to use miles for that night myself, as I'm usually over-spent by that time!

Just another take, the airport is a bit out of the city, and not much there. I would prefer finding a nice hotel in the Trastevere or Central Rome, enjoy a great meal and a walk around Rome at night, have your hotel arrange a taxi to the airport in the morning. You should be able to find a hotel for much less than $300, the fixed rate for the taxi is no different than 3 tickets on the Leonardo express, which you would pay anyway to get to the hotel by the airport, so to me, a night in Rome would be much more preferred over sitting in a chain hotel in an industrial park, and probably cost less.

Paul:
The post says they will be flying to FCO from Catania so staying near the airport is a much better idea.

Even if you come from Catania the afternoon before, unless you stay at the Airport Hilton there isn't a big advantage in staying in the town of Fiumicino. The taxi ride from Fiumicino (the town) to the Fiumicino airport is 10 min. From the city center of Rome, at that time of the morning, it's 30 min. So all you are saving is 20 min. It's up to you, but I would stay in Rome, maybe in the Trastevere area, which is very quaint and even closer to get to the airport (25 min taxi ride).

We have reservations at the Tiber for our night before home. We ended up staying in Fiumicino at the beginning of our trip (long story), but couldn't get in there. It was booked solid. We did go by to take a look and it looks great. I'm sure we will enjoy our night next week.

There is a shuttle service on a fixed schedule that serves many hotels in town. The price is 6€ pp. If it doesn't go early enough for you, they will make a special run at the same price, at least they did for us. We did not need a taxi.

There is info about that on the Tiber website. It's the same price from the airport to the hotel and there is also a schedule for that, with the option of a special pickup. You make reservations with the hotel or call the guy listed as the English speaking one. He helped us tremendously.

I know there are those who think that being so close to Rome and not going there is blasphemy. We were on our way to Istanbul and will be flying back through FCO from Athens. Every trip through FCO is not about Italy or Rome.

I think I'm with Paul on this. You will be stuck in a blah area overnight. Plus, you still have to take and pay for a cab twice between the airport and the hotel. I would stretch slightly more and take the cab all the way to Rome. Enjoy a lovely evening strolling around Rome, stay the night and take a morning cab to airport. Your hotel can even order a cab pick-up for you or just hike to a taxi stand. Plan on 45 minutes cab travel between Rome and the airport. Your cab will deliver you straight to your terminal.

Early in the morning there is no traffic going to the airport. It's not 45 minutes, it's 30 min max.

If your flight is from FCO to the U.S., You need to be at the airport 2 - 2.5 hours prior to departure at least, so for a 8:50 departure, you should get there at around 6:30

I did reply to your other site. I was just in rome and had an early flight i did get a good price for the hilton garden with free vans when i arrived coming into rome. When i tried to book outbound it was full. I stayed in rome at the closest room i could get near the train station. It was 2 minutes to walk and there are 2 bus transports that leave every 15 minutes starting at 4:45 am. It took 30 minutes early in the morning The area is dark and questionable but i walked fast and with purpose. No problem. It was 4 euros on the bus. I booked the 63 b & b through booking.com

I stayed at the hotel Tiber after a long flight from the west coast of Canada en route and was flying to Athens the next morning. I was returning to Rome for an RS tour so no point in going to Rome for a night. The hotel was fine. The taxi cost 7Euro from the airport and I took the shuttle out to the airport the next morning. I had a decent and reasonable lunch at the hotel, and spent the afternoon relaxing by their rooftop pool (maybe not something you will be able to do in Feb!). While Fiumicino is a busy fishing port with not much in the way of things to do, I did enjoy walking along to the end of the Quay and watching the locals catch their supper. Also watching the fishing fleet returning and off loading their catches. There are some decent looking restaurants and you can cross the bridge into the town proper. I just looked upon it as another RS experience. Just make sure you are in the lobby well before the time the shuttle leaves, it is very prompt and even a few minutes after the time posted you may find it has gone. Yes that is the voice of experience but the hotel called the shuttle and it came back and picked me up.

The Good Advice Here (and you've had too much) 1) Roberto -- be AT the airport 2.5 hours ahead of time.
2) It's YOUR decision. Stay where you want. If you're going to be 'over' the trip and want to use points the
last night by staying close to the airport DO it. I've done both. Stayed one more night in Rome, and stayed
at FCO airport hotel and saved a few $$$ and used 'points' because I was finished with the trip. I always
go back........at least so far!

Thank you to all those who took the time to reply and for all of your great advice. I forgot to mention in my post that we will be spending three nights in Rome prior to Sicily RS tour, in order to get over the jet lag and visit some sites I had not been to in previous trips. As we are not flying back into Rome until 4:00pm and leaving early the next morning, I really think we will end up staying close to the airport and just relaxing rather than going back into the city.

We are at the Tiber right now. Hope to fly home tomorrow. Flying standby is always iffy, and we didn't make it on this morning.

We called the Tiber and they called the shuttle to come pick us up. They did and the Tiber let us check in again early around 10:30.

You will arrive during normal airport-to-hotel hours. You go straight to P26 (out the farthest round door toward the tour buses). You do not need a reservation to get the shuttle to the Tiber. The cost is put on your hotel bill. If there are too many for the van, another van will show up amazingly quickly.

You do need a reservation for the trip to the airport and breakfast starts at 06:30. Contact the hotel about your early issues. I bet they can accommodate you somehow.

FWIW, I timed the transfer. It was about 10 minutes from P26 to the Tiber for us at 19:00 and 10:30. It was about 13 minutes from the Tiber to T5 for Delta at 07:00. That included dropping someone else off at a different terminal.

We were not impressed by the restaurant at the Tiber. There are many and better options along the canal just a short walk away. The fried calamari at GePaGi is every bit as good as Quirite said. The paper cones are big, so sharing might be a good idea.

I just wanted to say that I agree with your instinct not to try to spend the night in Rome. A few years ago, after a long and varied trip, we flew from Sicily to Rome in order to get our flight home. I knew I'd be suffering travel fatigue by then, and another day or night of sight-seeing would hold no appeal. (We'd been to Rome several times before.) We got a not-too-early flight, checked into our hotel, and took a leisurely stroll around the part of Fiumicino close to the canal. We had a perfectly nice dinner and repaired to our room for some tv and reading. The hotel had ordered us a taxi for the morning, which got us to the airport in plenty of time. I felt that it was a nice, low-stress way to
end our trip. Sorry, but I don't remember the names of the hotel and restaurant.

Grazie to "Lo" from Tucson who posted earlier this morning while actually AT the Hotel Tiber. So nice of you to take the time and I hope you have been able to get on a standby flight by this time. I emailed Hotel Tiber and they confirmed room suitability for 3 females and availability. They responded quickly and sent the shuttle schedule too. Then I was able to book with United miles, so that made it even better. Thanks again to all who responded to my post for your most helpful advice.
