Rome airport (FCO) to Florence transportation

From the time my scheduled landing in Rome, how much time do I need to allow between getting luggage and through customs prior to boarding a train? My flight is in place and I need to reserve train tickets. I don't want to cut my self short or allow too much time wasted at the airport waiting for my reserved train.

You have to get to Rome Termini from FCO to Florence. There is an express train to Termini from FCO called Leonardo Express which takes about 30 minutes. It runs every half hour and costs about 15 euro. Then you will take a train to Florence from Termini. There are a lot of trains which run to Florence. I don't think you need to reserve train tickets.

Getting through customs/passport control depends as well as getting luggage.

You don't "need" to reserve tickets in advance for the train to Florence. There are 2-3 departures per hour, so you can buy tickets at FCO for the next departure. Both the FCO to Rome and Rome to Florence tickets can be purchased at the airport, allowing you to stay within the secured area at Termini. If the timing works, there's an 11:08 departure from FCO that requires no change of train to reach Florence.

There is also a train at 15:08 from airport to direct to Florence with no changes, if that works with your arrival time.
