I searched the helpline for a current post on this but couldn't find one. Has anyone flown out of Rome Leonardo DaVinci in the past couple of months? We will be arriving by taxi and just want to be clear about where to go and timing. Apparently we take an airport bus to "terminal 5" for security and check in and then another bus to the gate. Is this correct? Because of this I am trying to determine if arriving at the airport 2 hours before our flight is sufficient or if we need to allow extra time for the "terminal 5" experience. Any advice would be appreciated!
The above info is accurate IF and it is a big IF, if you are flying directly back to the US. But if you are fly to somewhere else in Europe to take the direct flight (say Frankfurt or London) then it is the regular terminal. What is your flight schedule?
Lise, Just flew out of Rome June 22. We asked our driver to take us to terminal 5...he knew all about it. We flew out on a Monday and the terminal was not crowded. We did the check-in with passports, luggage, etc at this terminal. It took maybe 40 minutes. The procedure led us to the exit where a bus was waiting to take us to gates. It was simple.
We arrived 2 hours ahead of departure time and had lots of time to spare. I think weekend departures are more crowded.
Good luck.
Thank you, so much, CS. We also fly out on a monday so hopefully we will also have light crowds!
Hi Lise,
We flew out of FCO on 7/10 and as others have mentioned, our shuttle driver, we used romashttle.com, took us directy to terminal 5. We arrived 3 hours ahead of our flight - sort of an accident - but had plenty of time to get where we needed to go.
Good Luck,
Jodie
Thanks for all the tips! We are flying direct to Atlanta from Rome on a Monday morning, 10:20 am Delta flight. Although we have traveled in Italy a few times before, this is the first time we have flown home from Rome in probably 10 years, so I am sure it has changed much. I am hoping to have a smooth finish to this trip. We are accompanying my parents for their 50th anniversary. Mom has never been to Europe and Dad was last there in 1958. We are flying open jaw into Venice and out of Rome.
If you have a 10am flight I would definitely get there 3 hours early. I had a 9am flight a year back, and it took almost all the 3 hours to get checked in and to the flight. The morning is a popular time for flights back to the States.
Lise, everyone is correct; however, we did leave on the same Delta flight for Atlanta. We left the hotel with a driver at 7:15. Arrived at T. 5 about 7:55. That gave us about 2 hours and 20 minutes to get checked in. We had an hour to spare. Hope this helps.
Last year we flew home from Roma through Terminal 5 without any problems. We took the Leonardo to Terminal C, checked the departure monitor, and found the shuttle to T5. If you are going by taxi you will be delivered to the front door. We arrived 2 hours before departure, had plenty of time for check-in, and another shuttle back to Teminal C for the flight home. We are leaving next saturday for 3 weeks in Italy and we will be arriving in Roma. Remember, this is Italy and conventional rules or wisdom do not apply.

We just got back from Rome. Yes it was Terminal 5. We got there 2 hours prior and had enough time to go through security, but not enough time to eat before we got on the plane. If you want to eat, I would add another 1/2 hour.
Also, depending on your airline, I heard Delta took longer (and I saw their lines were a lot longer than the other airlines.)
Thanks for all the tips! We leave in 6 days - can't wait!
We took the Delta flight to Atlanta in May, however we left on a Sunday. Departed our hotel at 7am and got to Terminal 5 at 7:30 (which probably won't happen on a Monday). We had plenty of time after going thru security to have breakfast and wander thru the duty free shop. Have a wonderful trip.
