We’re planning on renting a car from
Europcar at the Rome airport and driving directly to Orvieto for a 3 night stay. From there 4 nights in Castalina and then 3 nights in Florence. Now we’re (mostly me) stressing about traffic and difficulty navigating /merging away from the Rome airport rental car area onto the highway. Any tips, suggestions or recommendations on using different navigation apps or GPS devices would be greatly appreciated. Our plan is to return the car at the Florence airport and either take a cab, train or a bus into Florence. Praying the Florence airport is not too complicated either?
This topic already well covered on the forum - here are search results for the past 2 years:
The roads up to Orvieto are comparable to our interstate highways--controlled access--and some of it are toll roads. 95 miles is not far, and I'm sure you won't have any problem.
The roads north of Rome are very well marked, and easily driven. Just try to leave Rome not in the rush hour. When you get in Tuscany, the 2 lane roads are a little hilly and crooked, but they're well paved and well marked. We traveled throughout the region stopping at Orvieto, Siena, Poggibonsi, Certaldo, San Gimignano and Volterra for sightseeing.
Another alternative would be to take a local train up to Orvieto and pickup a Hertz rental car across the street from the train station parking lot.
I may be wrong, but it appears you plan to rent the car on arrivel from the U.S. If so, please reconsider. After a long flight, being sleepy, jet lagged, and on strange turf, driving right away might be an accident waiting to happen. Some people are not bothered by those things, but many folks (self included) should not try it. Your forum moniker, "SafeTravels", might be indicative of how you should look at the idea of renting right away.
What you are concerned about is all rather easy and clear when driving. No app needed. You will be fine.
