We have looked over the other topics but we have not found one that answers our needs exactly so we are posting this topic. Once again we will be touring Italy and of course we will be staying in Rick Steves b & b's but a problem has developed. On Monday American Airlines informed us that they are dropping our 10:45 flight from their schedule and have moved us over to Brussels Airline departing at 6:35 in the morning. Our original plan was to stay at the Hotel Italia ( a R.S. place) in Rome and take the train to the airport but to do that now means getting up at 3:30 in the morning. We don't want to do that. Thus, we are searching for a hotel close to the airport that meets the following requirements: clean - safe area - fairly quiet - affordable ($125 or so) - shuttle service to the airport or the ability to walk it or close enough so the taxi service would not cost an arm and a leg. Any tips? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
Just do a search on this site. That question is frequently asked and answered.
I understand not wanting to get up at 3:30am, but if it were me, I'd suck it up and do that for the trade-off of enjoying my last night in Rome proper. Sleeping near the airport is going to pretty much eliminate "fairly quiet" and "affordable".
With a 6:35am departure time, I doubt you would be getting much more sleep anyway. If being at/near the airport is the most important, than the Hilton is probably the way to go.
I don't think you have a lot of choices. Since it is not an international flight you are safe being at the airport around 5 AM. But that still means leaving Rome around 4 AM. Most shuttles do not operate that early so you are dealing with a taxi and I think the night rate is 50E. If you were sub-thirty I would suggest spending the night at the airport. At best you will only get an extra hour of sleep staying near the airport.
I sincerely appreciate the effort behind the replies. Yes, we would prefer to stay in Rome (we have been there 3 different trips) but we don't really want to get up at 3:30 and then try to manage to make it over to the airport by 5:30. After reading the different topics on this forum we were hoping to somehow discover an answer to our problem. We wish American Airlines had not dropped their mid-morning flight.
At that time of the morning, the streets of Rome and the freeway to the airport will be mostly deserted. It will take very little time to get to the airport, especially with Rome's taxi drivers. Have your accommodation arrange a ride for you that morning. Your ride will arrive whenever you need it and whisk you away. The 40 Euro charge will more than make up for the extra charge for staying at the airport.
But, as we suggested earlier, if you have search this question, yuu would have found a lot of similar discussion with no great solutions. Sometimes there is not a good solution to a poor situation. And continuing to discuss it is not going to find a terrific solution. A lot of us have been through the exact situation and could not find a better answer. Look at the positive side, you will be so tired by the time you get to your flight home that you will sleep the whole way. Call the Hilton. Personally I would consider sleeping at the airport.
Thanks for your advice and for your patience. Have a great Christmas!
We took that same fight just four weeks ago. We left Rome (near Piazza Navona)at 4:30 in the morning and were at the airport by 5:00-not a problem. There was a short line for check in but the real glitch is in Brussels-you have to be screened at the gate by an AA employee to receive your international boarding pass. Nothing at the Rome airport is open at 5:0o-bring a breakfast snack-mine was some delicious cookies from the Campo dei Fiori bakery.
