Is it better to stay inside the city for a noon flight back to US? How long is the train ride from Town Center to Airport?

Becky, I would stay in Rome. It's a 30 minute train ride back to the aiport. That way you can enjoy your last evening rather than be stuck at a remote hotel.

We're currently living in Rome and have folks visit us all the time - 2 couples this week! If you have a 12 noon flight back you do not need to be at the airport till 9 AM. In fact, most flights DO NOT open for boarding until 3 hours in advance.
Having said that I would agree with Gela - DON'T waste your last night at an Airport Hotel! You can get a taxi from your hotel at 8 AM and be at FCO in plenty of time...
Of if you're close to Termini Station, you can ride the Leonardo Express. These non-stop trains leave at 22 and 52 minutes after the hour and it takes about 30 minutes to get to the airport. They start at 5:52 AM. Have a great time!

If your flight isn't until noon stay in the center. The Leonardo Express train takes about a half hour. Trains depart twice an hour.
