My husband and I are going to Rome in May with friends that have never been. We will let them go off on their own to see the Vatican and others we have see several times. Any ideas for some lesser known spots for the two of us to see?
Thanks!
I have a wonderful suggestion. Last October, my sister and I were in Rome for the second time and wanting something different. We took a food crawl with Gourmetaly, a small company with guides born and raised in Rome. Our group was intimate, only six of us. Our guide was wonderful, educating us in the history, food and traditions of the city. We sampled wonderful food from six different restaurants/bakeries/shops in locales off the big tourist areas. What an experience! It was the highlight of our time in Italy. Suggestion: do it early on your Rome visit as you will want to return to these eateries and treat your friends to good, authentic Roman food.
Those of us here don't know what spots you haven't seen.
Can you clarify, so we can give more helpful suggestions.

Not exactly unknown now .... but still much less well known than the big attractions.
Also, what are your interests? I could spend weeks in the Vatican museums, There are several other great museums in Rome, lots of churches - each is a small art museum. There are day trips. There are self-guided walking tours that you can use to explore areas on your own.
One drizzly day in Rome, several years ago, we just walked for what seemed like miles, popping into every church we passed - and there seems to be a church on every corner! Chani's right; each is a museum in its own right, and they're all different. Take time to really look at the side chapels, the ceilings, and even the columns marching down the nave. Informative, entertaining, and, if you're at all spiritually inclined, enlightening.
Gretchen, Consider a trip out to Ostia Antica just outside Rome. It is the original site of Rome and is quite a different change of pace. You can get there on public transient quickly and cheaply. Google it and see what you think. It is closed either Sunday or Monday -- can't remember which. TC
Thank you so much everyone!!!
