Rome Accomodation Easter Weekend

Any recommendations on best places to stay this Easter weekend for 3 people? We will meet our daughter who is studying abroad for 4 nights in Rome. We're fine with a convent, religious house, apartment or simple accomodation. We plan to visit the Vatican and beautiful churches in the city. Thanks, Karen

Karen, with that only a couple of weeks away and with the hunt for a new Pope and all you may find it difficult to find just what you want at what you would like to pay where you would like it. Can I suggest that you start off with bookings.com or other booking service and the folks at http://www.monasterystays.com/ may be able to help. Easter is a hugely busy time in Rome and Vatican City, and this Easter is likely to be even more. It is unusual to change Popes at Easter. I'd double check times of opening and tours; at the moment with the changing of the Pope hours and opening of parts of Vatican City are restricted. Don't be depressed if the first few places you check are full or unaffordable. Good luck. It will be lovely for you to see your daughter.

Easter in Rome this year could be the best of times or the worst of times. Easter is always more expensive in Rome, this year even harder to find rooms. Booking.com is a great source. Monasterystays charges you a nice lite commission. For religious guesthouses in Rome, try santasusanna.org (or could be .com), they seem to have a better selection. Santa Susanna is the American church in Rome and their website is very helpful.

You may also want to check www.airbnb.com and see if there is an apartment. Although I booked some weeks back, I got a little studio right at the Vatican walls. The Prati and Vatican area is more of a neighborhood environment. You may also want to check out http://www.roninrome.com/, and contact Ron himself, especially if you have trouble finding a place.

I agree about reading on RonInRome.com. He has many listings for accommodations, and general tips on how to negotiate the city. My best suggestion is to quickly figure out how to get around on public transport. Otherwise, you'll either go broke on taxi's or walk your legs off.
I personally prefer to stay in modern facilities, with WiFi and a television other than a convent that is a little quiet.

Karen, the other thing to keep in mind is that all Catholic churches will be occupied with more liturgies than normal, so getting in will be more challenging. You don't say which days you'll be in Rome, but I'd guess the Monday after Easter would be the best bet for having easier access to churches. If your stay is before Easter, the Wednesday and Saturday before Easter are likely to be the best bets. On Saturday, you'll need to pay attention to when the Easter vigil Mass starts; that can be any time after sunset.

Many thanks to you all for your excellent advice! We found a room near the Piazza Navona at the Casa di Sara and are thrilled to be in such a central location. Now on to what we will do while there........
Sincerely, Karen
