I'm looking for a little input. I'm looking for a place in Rome that can accommodate all of us. There are 5 families, for a total of 13 people. We are somewhat limited in walking, as there are older family members that can't do much more than about 2 or 3 miles a day. For everyone except my wife and I, this will be their first trip to Rome. So, if you've travelled with a group and found a good place, please respond. Along those lines, which area would you suggest? The pantheon area seems good but pricey. The Spanish Steps seem like a good location as well. An early thanks for the input.
Both of those areas are great areas. Budget will be the determining factor as you've seen that both of those areas are of a higher price than staying in areas such as the termini or the Vatican areas.
Rome has a very good transportation system with buses, trams and the metro. You can get to most anywhere by using one form or another.
Last summer we stayed at a hotel just behind the Vatican, with a bus stop right outside the door. It's called the Hotel San Pietro. There is a train station a 5 minute walk from the hotel so getting to and from the airport is very easy. The bus stop makes it super easy to get into and out of anywhere in the city. The rooms were a lot larger than others we've stayed in. It's a basic hotel but the breakfast is good and there are some great, local restaurants just around the corner.

You might do well to look into renting three or four apartments, for space and amenities. VRBO or booking.com are good sources since you can find one building with several apartments, or two buildings near each other. If you prefer hotels, booking.com is good.
I've never rented an apartment in Rome, but I've stayed at Hotel Genio near Piazza Navona. It's a big hotel (for the Centro Storico), has an elevator and rooftop terrace where you can have breakfast (extensive buffet) or gather in the evening (stays open until 11pm but lighting is not great after dark). There is a bus stop and taxi stand within 20 or so meters.
I second the idea of apartments. VRBO.com, AirBNB.com, and cross-pollinate.com are all good resources. You should be able to find two or three apartments together that will take all of you. 4 years ago we stayed at Palazzo Olivia with mixed feelings. IT has since been renovated and might serve your needs with a combo of apartments and rooms.
The Prati area, around the Vatican, is super efficient with great transportation options. Folks who can do 2-3 miles a day can see a lot of Rome with a little bus or taxi assistance at the end of the day.
Thanks for the input. The more I'm reading, the more the Prati neighborhood sounds great. Thanks again.
Hotel Alimandi Tunisi now has a BnB close to the hotel. You may be able to put a family in the Bnb and the older folks in the hotel, which has an elevator. It's in the Prati district.
You might want to read RonInRome.com about his accommodation list. His info on Rome (and Italy) is hard to beat.
After walking too far the first day we were in Rome, we quickly figured out how to navigate the excellent bus and metro system. You can get all over town quickly via buses.
Squid, If you want an opinion on a specific location or apartment, fell free to PM me.
