rome

we are making our 3rd trip to Italy and our 2nd to Rome. When we were in Rome 3yrs ago we saw all of the major sites including touring the vatican. we are staying at Campo de' Fiori
we were planning to visit Villa d'Este/Hadrian's Villa on our way down from Civita di Bagnoregio (we have a car). is it worth the stop to visit?
what other sites would you recommend, knowing we have visited the major ones as i mentioned.

is the Capuchin Crypt worth visiting? i have seen mixed reviews on it. some saying to skip it and see other sites.

thx

The Galleria Borghese. Especially if you like Baroque sculpture. A small , lovely gallery and a must . Entrance is timed so you must reserve in advance. You can call them and make a reservation. English is spoken. Not to be missed.

A long walk on the Appia Antica: so far, our favorite day in Rome.

I found the Capuchin Crypt strange and really only went because my nephew wanted to go.

I like Villa d'Este best in Tivoli. I think Hadrian's Villa would benefit from a guided tour if you can set that up.

As mentioned, a walk on the Appia Antica is great. Also consider Ostia Antica, Galleria Borghese (reservations required), Palazzo Massimo, Galleria Doria Pamphilj, Hiking up the Aventino and/or Gianicolo for the views.

Domus Aurea, open only on weekends. Must buy tickets well in advance.
Domus Romane at Palazzo Valentini. Open six days a week but must make reservations well in advance.
The Orange Garden on the Aventine Hill. Free.
Museo Centrale Montemartini (ancient Roman statues in a decommissioned power plant). You'll probably be the only ones there.
MACRO Testaccio. In two converted warehouses in a former slaughterhouse complex. Fascinating.
Aqueduct Park. Free.
Wine tasting class through http://www.vinoroma.com/

And consider doing a dinner through eatwith.com. I can personally recommend the one in Trastevere with Federica and Barbara.

Michael is right: Domus Romane is super. I forgot to mention it! The Domus Aurea is not open right now, but do check this site periodically and jump on tickets if they come available.

Some special events are on until Nov. 1 in the Fori Imperiali. There are two events, Foro di Augusto and Foro di Cesare. The former is a multi-media show you see from bleachers, the the latter is a walk through tour, the first time Ceasar's Forum has been open to tours. Both are at night. Prior guests of our had trouble making arrangements for tickets to both events the same night because of a quirk in the website, so if you have trouble, call during Italian business hours. They speak English and can get the job done for you.
