I want to explore the option of renting a car with a driver for a day in order to get to the city, have the flexibilty with it sightseeing, and returning to the port. For a group of 5 with kids. Thinking this expense might be a trade-off to alleviate some worry that comes with the limited time to see Rome. Any reputable companies to contact? Thanks for any feedback
First, it will be expensive and then some. The standard cab fare to Rome is about 100 Euro each way. Is you group 5 or more than five. Don't know how "with kids" impacts your numbers. Rome and Civit... are not the same. Civit.. is about 50 miles from Rome. Train travel is easy and cheap since it is basically a commuter run with 3 to 4 trains any hour each way and takes about an hour depending on the train. The train station is less than a half mile, easy walk, from the port entrance. You can get a nine zone ticket (forgot the actual name) which is good for the day on all Rome transportation. It was 9 Euro two years ago. You could get off at Trastrevere and slowly walk across Rome (2 to 3 miles) to Termini and back to Civit.. You could catch most of the major sites on the walk. If you still want a car and drive, contact Romacabs.
You won't be able to drive a rental car into the city as there are limited traffic zones which require special permits. If you are caught the fines are hundreds of euros. I would suggest taking the train and seeing the sites that way. Just give yourself enough time to get back to the port on time. Donna
