Rome's "Tourist Tax" Effectice 1/2011

I was looking for a hotel in Rome for some friends who are coming to visit us during our extended stay in the fall, and each hotel had at the end of the their email reply that effective Jan 1, 2011, Rome instituted a "Tourist Tax". Something appears to be lost in translation though because I am a little confused about it. Is it just for hotels or does it also apply to hostels and/or bed and breakfasts? Is there a limit to how much they can charge? Thanks for any info you have!

Should you mention it to the apartment landlord? I wouldn't. It is Italy and a lot of transactions happen under the table. If the landlord is not reporting you as a guest, he/she won't be paying the tourist tax. If they are reporting you, then they will charge you the tax.

Pittsburgh as a 7% hotel tax and my hometown of Scottsdale has 5% tax. More cities are adding a tax to tourists as it's a way to generate income without angering constituents.

And go prepared: it is my understanding that this new hotel tax for tourists must be paid directly to the hotel (in other words, not included in your rates as the VAT tax is) and must be paid in cash.

Thanks all! When you equate it with the taxes that certain cities charge for hotel stays, it makes sense. And yes, based on what the hotels have sent me, I did catch that this new tax must be paid directly to the hotel.
The owner of the apartment Im staying in for 2 months hasnt mentioned it. Dare I ask?...
