Rome 31st Dec - 4th Jan

Hi everyone,

I am trying to work out an itinerary and book tickets for all the important Rome places (Colosseum, Forum, Capitoline Hill, Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, Spanish steps, Vatican, Campo de Fiori, Trevi Fountain, Borghese Gallery etc). The problem is that we are there during some closed times. Has anyone been to Rome at a similar time and can suggest which days to do these activities and what to do on NYE? Also - New Years day ideas?

Thanks heaps for your help!
Genesa.

Is this part of the 22 day trip mentioned in your other post?

Have you set your locations and dates?

Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain require no tickets. These can be done whenever and would be suitable for the Holiday, when other attractions may be closed

Colosseum, Vatican etc., you just have to work around their schedules.

The Borghese Gallery requires booking a 2-hour time block. Check the museum website to see whether any tickets are still available for the period of your stay. If not, that's a place you won't need to worry about until your next trip to Rome.

What are your full days in Rome? The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd? Do you arrive on the 31st and at what time? Are you arriving from the US, jetlagged, or will you already be in Europe? Where are you staying?

Gene, you have listed a number of attractions which don't require tickets at all. Those would be Piazza del Popolo, Spanish Steps, Campo de Fiori and Trevi Fountain. All of those are just outdoor places which you walk by or walk through. You can do them at any time, on any day. .

The few you should get advance tickets for are Galleria Borghese (reservations are mandatory), Colosseum/Forum/Palatine (one ticket includes all three), and the Vatican Museums. Yes, all of them may be closed on January 1 so you'll need to choose different things to do on that day; maybe a walk which includes the first 4 outdoor places.

Yes this is the same trip. We will have full days on the 1st, 2nd & 3rd Jan. The 31st is a half day as we should arrive around 12ish. Lots of websites are saying to go to the Colosseum for NYE. What do you think?

i believe the big celebration is now in Circus Maximus, not at the Colosseo. Keep an eye on the Rome Wise website for info. Dinner is a big deal and you will need reservations! Ask your hotel for ideas. You will want to stay in walking distance as public transportation is unreliable that night. Busses get diverted and the Metro closes some stations including Colosseo and Circus Maximus.

On the 1st, take a scenic walk to see the outdoor sites. Again, a reservation for lunch and dinner is advisable.

The 2nd and 3rd should be business as usual but busy with lots of tourists! Get reservations and tickets for timed entry. ASAP. You could see the Vatican one day and concentrate on the Colosseo and Forum the other. You might be able to squeeze in the Borghese. A 5:00 pm entry time might be best as you can see something else during earlier daylight hours,
