Rome - 3 Day Itinerary review

Going to Italy for my second trip and would like some help and/or comments on my ideas for Rome in 3 days. I previously toured Rome on a RS tour in 2010 and it was a whirlwind - that is why I've decided to come back and begin this Italy trip in Rome with Sorrento & Paris afterwards. Here is what I thought I would do this time: 9-20 Thurs Arrive Rome & settle into Hostel; Colloseum-possible underground tour; St. Peters In Chains Church; dinner in area & early bedtime 9-21 Fri Borghese Gallery & Gardens;Capuchin Crypt; Santa Maria della Vittoria for Bernini's St. Teresa in Ecstasy; Trastevere & RS night walk 9/22-Sat Rome-Catacombs of San Callisto & Appian Way & Pantheon in the evening; dinner nearby 9/23-Sun Rome-Sorrento: Porta Portese market & then Marozzii bus to Sorrento (4+hrs) Do any of you have comments on the Portese Market? Is it worth enjoying on my last morning in Rome? It is somewhat far away from Tiburtina (where I catch my Sorrento bus). Enough time to get there? Would you do something else with a few hours in the morning on your last day in Rome (until the next time of course)? Also, do you have recommendations for places to eat around the Colloseum/St. Peter's In Chains, Trastevere and Pantheon? I have the RS Rome & Amalfi guides and follow this Helpline all the time. Thanks for your ideas and thoughts. Ciao, Linda

I liked the Capucin crypt - a little morbid and creepy tho ;p . Also enjoyed Appia Antica and the ancient ROman road and the catacombs...one thing we did learn was that I think when we were there, it was closed from noon-1pm for lunch or somehting, but gave us an opportunity to wander up the road...

What all did you see the first visit? We're making our second trip to Italy this summer, and plan to spend most of our single day in Rome at Borghese and the surrounding churches and museums, plus maybe a little side trip up to the Catacomb of Priscilla. We covered a lot of ground last time, and will probably revisit Trevi fountain and Piazza Navona, maybe a drive-by of the colosseum. I will follow this thread for ideas! Jan

Jan, on the RS tour we covered a lot of ground but it was somewhat too fast a pace for me. We did ancient Rome, the Vatican museums, St. Peter's - Sistine, Trastevere, night walk including many wonderful fountains - Trevi being one, the Pantheon and some churches I do not recall the names of. On my own, I went to Santa Maria Novella. So, since my time is limited, I want to revisit the Coliseum, Pantheon, Trastevere, and the RS night walk. New on the itinerary is St. peter's In chains church, Borgese and the Appian Way and catacombs. I'm not sure about the Portese market. Any thoughts?

The Porta Portese market is a zoo! Very much like any other street market but on steroids. Otherwise sounds like a good three days. Trastevere is a great place for restaurants, as for the other areas you name, just walk a block or two away from the main site and you'll find places that are less expensive and more authentic. If you can fit them in, the churches of Santa Costanza and Sant'Agnese just off Via Nomentana are worth a visit (easy access by bus and they are located right next to each other).

Zoe, thanks for the other church suggestions. So, I'm taking it you were not into the Portese Market. Any ideas for a quieter market on a Sunday morning. My hostel is near Termini and I will be bussing it in the afternoon to Sorrento. thanks again for your thoughts. Linda
