Please critique my itinerary for Rome in September for 3 days. I have been to Rome once already; touring ancient Rome, Pantheon, the Vatican & St. Peter's w/ RS tour. I arrive mid-day from JFK. Day 1 (1/2 day) Colloseum underground tour, St. Peter's In Chains church & San Clemente; Day 2: Borghese, Cappuchin Crypt, Santa Maria Della Vittoria; then RS Trastevere & night walk; Day 3: Appian Way & catacombs of San Callisto tour; aqueduct park possible; Day 4 (1/2 day): nothing planned for a.m.; fast train to Naples mid-day I am looking for ideas to fill my last morning in Rome before catching the train to Naples. My accommodations are near Termini. Do you think my first 1/2 day is filled with too much after a long travel day? I am trying to make the best use of time in Rome. Thanks again for all your help. Linda
Go For It. When we got off the plane dropped our luggage and off we went. We did this last year in July. My father who is 83 kept up. Also if you need to make reservations or get tickets we called the places up before we went to Italy. We also got a Roma Pass. Go earLy and be prepare for lines. And if you decide to go to the Vatican, it's best to go in the middle of the week. Also there are places where you need to cover your arms and knees. I always carry a top in my bag so I can put it over my sleeveless top. I also wore a loose skirt. Enjoy you will love Italy
If these are the sites you want to see, and the activities you want to do, then go for it! I think it is best to be busy upon arrival so you don't succumb to napping. You might check in, dump your luggage, take a quick shower to refresh, and be sure to eat lunch. After an early-ish dinner, collapse. Be sure to go to the first Borghese tour time, 09:00. That will give you time to pursue the rest of your itinerary on Day 2. Acqueduct Park is fascinating and worth a stroll if you aren't exhausted already. :-) I'd leave Day 4 AM open for what strikes you. You may find you need to rest, do soem shopping, or explore a site you didn't know about. Always good to have some flexible time in the plan.
I don't see the Vatican sites listed on your itinerary. Have you already been? if not it would be most sad to miss them. Just a suggestion. Also, I hope you are touring the Forum along with the Colosseum.
I appreciate the responses so far. I have been to the Coloseum, Forum and Vatican before, an mentioned. However, I want to do the underground tour at the Coloseum - will book that closer to my trip time. Yes, I do plan on getting reservations for the Borghese for 9 a.m.to take advantage of a full day. In the Termini area, or close by, what would you suggest? I like open markets but it will be Sunday. Any ideas? Believe me, the idea of just chilling on that morning is appealing since I will travel by fast train to Naples & then Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento in the afternoon. Linda
Can you sleep on the plane? We hit the ground running after a long travel day, and never felt jet lagged. We had stayed up all night (not on purpose) the night before, and had about 18 hours of travel (from the west coast), so managed to sleep a lot on our planes. We felt rested when we arrived. The National Museum is just a short walk from the Termini, and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Right across the street (catty corner) is the Baths of Diocletian, now a museum, but was remodeled by Michaelangelo. I have not been to that one, but it could be interesting! Jan B
You seem to be interested in churches. If so, try to throw in the church of Santa Prassede, if you like mosaics. And step into the broom closet-sized Chapel of St. Zeno for a jaw-dropping spectacle of gold mosaics. It was hard to get a lot of good pictures, so I ended up buying one of the small books in the tiny gift store. But here are a few, if you're interested.
Jan, can't say I sleep very well on planes, although I certainly try. Maybe I'll use earplugs and eyepatch this time. Michael, thanks for the church referral. I'm more into the art in situ, than the actual church experience. I do enjoy your photos though. I compared your photos of Assisi with my own. I just loved Assisi. This trip is focused on Rome and places South. Thanks for your tips. Linda
Linda, I always hit the ground running (well, strolling, actually). Set your watch to local time as soon as you get on the plan, drink lots of water, you should be good to go. On your last morning, you might find a stroll through Trastevere, or the area between Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and Campo dei Fiori. If your day 4 is a Sunday, these places will be fairly empty (except for the Pantheon). If you have additional time South of Naples, I suggest looking into Paestum - ancient temples, good museum, and a beach.
