We'll be in Rome in March, and have an early departure. We are wondering if we should stay at a hotel near the airport? Or do the shuttles run as early as 5 am? Can you recommend a hotel near the airport? We are staying in Rome, but will venture out by train to Assisi. We are thinking of spending 2 or 3 nights out--probably in Perugia and maybe around the loop back to Rome by way of Orvieto. We were going to head out on March 9, but it is Ash Weds. Would that complicate our travels? Thanks! HB and I love Italy--we've been there several times and can't get enough!
The Leonardo Express, the shuttle train from downtown Rome to the airport, makes its first run at 5:52 AM, then runs every 30 minutes until 10:52 PM. The closest hotel is the Hilton Airport Rome. Expensive, but you can walk to the terminals.
Thank you, Tom, I will check out the hotel by the airport. Our flight leaves FCO at 8:45 am, so maybe the train would be sufficient, if it is not so crowded that we can't get on--
We were in Italy last summer and took the train from FCO into Rome. Yes it was easy, but with our luggage it was a little stressful. When we went from Rome back to FCO we hired a taxi. We were picked up at the front door of our hotel and dropped of at the check-in at FCO. This was so much easier as we now had more bags with us because of our souviners....I believe it cost 45 euros for the taxi. We too had an early flight and arrived to FCO with plenty of time to spare.
NOTE NOTE NOTE that there is a SIT airport bus shuttle from Rome Via Marsala 5 (Piazza dei Cinquecento, in front of Royal Hotel Santina, 300 yards from Termini train station) to FCO Airport at 5:00 a.m., which gets to the airport by 5:50 a.m. One-way fare is 8 Euros. This is an earlier departure than the first airport train to FCO (which costs 14 Euros). This airport bus will allow you to check in for a flight departing after 8:50 a.m. www.sitbusshuttle.it http://www.sitbusshuttle.it/images/pdf/orari_bus_shuttle.pdf
Thanks so much!! The shuttle sounds like a great option. Our flight leaves at 8:35m though. Wouldn't arriving there at 5:50 on the shuttle be early enough? Cheryl
Yes. 5:50 a.m. should be early enough.
Assisi or Perugia? I'd stick with Assisi and maybe a day trip to Perugia. I spend 2 weeks each summer in Assisi (I direct a music festival there). After 7 years I still am in awe of Assisi by day and by night. Perugia is nice, has great chocolate but . . . bob
Cheryl, the key is whether you are on an international flight departing directly back to the US or on a flight connecting to somewhere else in Europe before going to the US. Your time for departure would suggest a connecting flight. If a connecting flight then two hours early is more than enough at that time of morning. So you can sleep an extra hour.
There are several hotels near the airport if you choose to go that way. Here's a link to a map showing them. http://rome.airporthotelguide.com/map.html For a flight that early I would be inclined to stay at the Hilton adjacent to the terminal or at least nearby.
Spending your last night in Rome is quite OK. Hotels are quite used to having a taxi show up as early in the morning as you need. 4:00am is not uncommon. The fare to the airport in a taxi (not a larger vehicle), is about 45E. It's see by local law. Staying in Fiumicino is also popular althrough the hotels aren't anywhere as nice. Also, they can be a bit more expensive as they know why you are there. One night - early shuttle to the airport. Check out the www.triipadvisor.com reviews for hotels in Fiumicino, Italy. Even the Hilton isn't rated that great there but they do have a long walkway directly into the airport. That part is very nice.
Thanks, everybody! I think we will stay the last night at our hotel (Sonya!) and take the shuttle very early! I just need to locate their pick up and drop off spot. Or maybe I can talk my hubby into splurging for a taxi!!!
