My boyfriend and I will be leaving for Rome in a week. I found out about the Roma Pass when doing research for our trip and was instantly drawn to it. It seems like a terrific deal. But is it really? I just want some input from someone who has used it and what they think. Thanks!
If you plan on going to two participating venues AND you will use the 3 days of metro or bus transport... then the Roma Pass can be a good buy. If you're not going to use local public transportation, the Pass becomes less cost-effective. After the first two "free" venues, the Pass does allow you to get variable discounts at other lcoations. So you have to pre-plan your route and go to the highest costing sites first. You might read this article for more info: Should I Buy a Roma Pass?
Using it for the most expensive entries first as our freebies and using the metro quite a bit we found it worth it. And as RiR said, the discounts at the other sights added up too. I figured we saved somewhere around ten euro each. Not huge savings but every little bit helps.
This is the latest info regarding the general availability of the Roma Pass. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g187791-i22-k4835171-Roma_pass_really_not_available-Rome_Lazio.html
It is worth the fee just to bypass the line at the Colloseum. Put away the calculator and buy it!
There have been a number of posts over on TripAdvisor recently that people have had a hard time finding the RomaPass so you may want alternate plans without it. Apparently they are either redoing it or it may be ending for some reason. We chose not to bother with it as we primarily walk everywhere and were not hitting enough of their attractions to make it worthwhile on our last trip, Borghese Gallery and Colosseum/Forum/Palatine would have come out not quite even for us cost wise. We pick up our Colosseum/Forum/Palatine tickets at the Palatine or Forum entrances and rarely have a wait of more than a few minutes if your purpose is just to avoid ticket lines at the Colosseum. Even if you do find a pass, remember it does not include the Vatican Museums.
Just to add to Ron's post, if you're not using public transportation but plan on visiting at least 3 or more sites covered by the pass then you'll save money. Just be aware that the romapass will not get you into the Vatican museums. Donna
Good reminder about the Vatican not being covered by the Roma Pass. Remember, Vatican City is a completely separate country.
