Romantic ideas for anniversary in Rome

We will be spending our actual anniversary in Rome on Friday April 21 (Rome's birthday, I just realized that today). Our Italy trip overall will be pretty busy so I was thinking to leave this day "free" except for dinner reservations, so we can have a more relaxed day and move at our own pace. I do want to have some good options thought out ahead of time though so we can pick and choose out of them what we feel like doing. So far I've come up with the following:

  • Campo dei Fiori (early in the morning)
  • explore streets Via Governo Vecchio and Via dei Coronari
  • explore Borghese gardens (visited Borghese museum on honeymoon already)
  • Caffe Colbert (drinks or lunch, looks to have great views of Rome)
  • Ostia Antica (haven't been yet and we love ancient Roman ruins)
  • Villa Farnese
  • Fountain scavenger hunt (thought it would be fun to look for different fountains in Rome)

Are there any art museums you would consider more romantic (besides Borghese or Vatican, we've been to both)? Would you recommend visiting one of the seven hills? Any other ideas to consider?

At the south end of Piazza Navona, where you will be between Campo dei Fiori and Via del Governo Vecchio, is Museo di Roma Palazzo Braschi. It portrays art of Roma throughout the centuries and is lightly attended. Worth a stroll. Fabulous view of P.za Navona, too.

The view from the Gianicolo (Janiculum in English) is lovely especially late in the day as it is west of the city. It is not officially one of the "seven hills of Rome" but frankly those are not as impressive.

Another museum of interest might be the president's home, the Quirinale. It opened to the public when the current president took office. Previously it was difficult to visit as it was only open once-a-week.

The city rose garden ("Roseto Comunale") will re-open on April 21st - it's closed throughout the colder months so it's going to be a beautiful event! Of course you may expect a lot of people visiting on that day, but as it the garden is located at the base of Aventine Hill, if it's too packed you can also make your way up to the top of it, enjoy the stunning view of central Rome from Giardino degli Aranci or the keyhole view of the Vatican from piazza Cavalieri di Malta.

The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica is located in Palazzo Barberini, a gorgeous building, and holds Raphael's La Fornarina, a romantic painting indeed, as it is supposed that the model was Raphael's lover.

When we were last in Rome, celebrating our 25 wedding anniversary, we had dinner at Antico Arco. It was a very nice meal in a celebratory place.

Nero's Golden House (Domus Aurus) is really interesting, though not so romantic (though it is somewhat dimly lit).

Ostia Antica might be fun. When we went, we spent about half a day there; we bought food beforehand and had a delicious picnic lunch there.

Lexma, I have added your suggestion of Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica to our day. We will visit Domus Aurea on the Saturday that we're in Rome...you seem to recognize our interests!

We've settled on OA in the morning, Borghese Gardens and Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica in the afternoon/evening. Now we just need to pick a spot for dinner! We plan to be exploring Rome on Wednesday so I'm wondering if we can book a place that appeals for Friday while we're doing our exploring? Hoping most places would have availability at that time.
