suggestions on where to stay our first time and first night in venice?
Try Locanda al Leon. You can email "Red" and he will I am sure be as helpful for you as he was for us. Two blocks from San Marco, with plenty of places to eat. Really convienient for a late night in the Piazza. Enjoy! Caio, Jeff
You need to be more specific in terms of dollars instead of using nebulous terms like affordable. Affordable means different things to different people. Everything in Venice is more expensive.
Try using venere.com or tripadvisor.com to provide an idea of the costs associated with location and the numer of stars a hotel has been rated. These sights will give you hotel categories, prices, map locations, and client reviews. They are extremely dependable. I have used venere.com many times and have been satisfied with theier service.
Two years ago we stayed at the Hotel Abbazia near the main train station and were very happy with the place. It is a former Carmelite monastery located on a very quiet calle (alley).
Buon viaggio,
