Roman Mythology in Rome with a 10 year old. Forum? Capitoline? Or...???

Ciao!
I am traveling to Rome in June with my husband and 10 year old who is passionate about the book series "Pegasus" (a mythology based series like Percy Jackson) and she loves mythology in general. She also loves learning and tends to dominate the tour guides with lots of questions. A kid's tour might be good but not necessarily required at all to hold her attention.
For her birthday, I'd love to highlight Roman mythology and do a private tour that she would especially LOVE but I'm having trouble getting any potential guides to specify what would be best. Would she see much of the actual temples on the Forum tour? Or is the Capitoline museum the best? Is it realistic to combine the 2? Or are there better mythology tours?
Most tours tend to combo the Colosseum and the Forum and last 3 hours. While the Colosseum must be amazing to see inside, I can't get a feel for how long one spends there. And it is not really her main interest, but can we pass it up? Colosseum, Forum and Capitoline museum seem like a lot in one tour.

We are likely going to do a small group early Sistine Chapel/Vatican tour as our other main tour and she is interested in the Borghese museum because of Rick's show :-)

Thank you for any ideas and suggestions you have!

Does your 10 year old have a 3 hour attention span for a tour, don't forget to factor in at least an hour wait to enter the Colosseum?

She will love Rome and just walking around with a guide book and audio guide will fill her time...IMHO too many guided tours lock you into time and you may find that on the ground with heat, jetlag and kids in tow, too many obligations become overwhelming. There are always guides offering on the spot tours at every major sight.

There are some great children's books in the Colosseum shop that she may enjoy.

Don't forget to go up to the TOP of the metro station to see the view of the Colosseum and Palintine hill from up high...nice cafe up there to cool off in as well. Enjoy your trip!

Off the top of my head:

The Borghese Gallery is good for mythology as depicted in Renaissance and later art. Most of the works described in the self-guided tour notes in Rick's Rome book are on that theme.

I'd say that the Roman Forum and Pantheon are must-sees. It's been ages since I was I the Capitoline museum, but I think you'd have to skip past a lot of emperors to find the myths.

"Rome Then and Now" books are helpful to fill in the gaps. These books are for sale around different Roman sites, as well as you can find some on Amazon before you go, and tour guides tend to carry something similar.

How wonderful that your young person is so interested in mythology. She'll have a ball in Rome!

I haven't taken this tour personally - and it's quite expensive - but Context has seen many positive mentions on the forums, and a small group is probably just the thing for a curious child with lots of questions:

There are a couple of glowing reports from parents who did this with their youngsters on this Trip Advisor page:

My children who were slightly older than your daughter really enjoyed the Colosseum Underground Tour. Our tour was one of the first of the day (a Saturday in August) so it was not really crowded or hot yet. Our guide, Paola was very informative and the group was only about 12-15 people not the booked 25 persons. We had a busy day and did not stay much longer after our tour. The tour was time well spent. We booked through the Co-op Culture website. We visited the Vatican Museum/Sistine Chapel and St Peters the same day, in the afternoon. We had pre-booked tickets so getting in was quick but museum and Sistine Chapel was the most crowded place we visited in 6 weeks of travel. It was shoulder to shoulder. Although the Sistine Chapel was on my daughter's must see list, it was the one place that we weren't really sure was worth it given the crowds and heat. They enjoyed St Peter's more, enjoyed the grotto and later climbed the dome. Both of my children are also classics and mythology fans and Percy Jackson fans.

We are taking our 12 year old grandson on 3 tours with "Rome with Kids" in June. They have 2 tours based around the Percy Jackson books, along with many other Rome and other Italian city tours. Their tours get rave reviews from families on TripAdvisor. Throughout the majority of our 3 week Italian adventure we are relying on Italy's magnificence and Rick Steve's audio files and guidebooks and our past 3 Italian trips to provide context for our touring but thought it would be fun to add these private tours for the Forum/Colosseum, the Vatican and the Percy Jackson Capitoline Museum.
So far setting up the tours has been easy, communicating with Clelia, the admin person has been flawless and you pay for the tour directly to the tour guide, so no advance payment. For the Colosseum/Forum and the Vatican tours they did have us buy our tickets and forward the email vouchers to them. I expect this is to prevent tourists showing up without their tickets although I plan to bring my vouchers with me as well.

Thank you for all of these helpful tips!
I actually picked Rome due to my daughter's mythology interest and the rave reviews of the Rome Tours with Kids but they are booked up on the dates I need.

I am leaning toward the Context Tours even though it is pricey. I think their mythology tour with all the art history may provide a great context for the rest of our trip. I know I will learn a lot too.

Thanks again. I'm so glad I asked!

If she's not interested in the Colosseum, just walk by it. It's impressive enough from the outside.

Thanks Zoe, I'm still exploring colosseum options:)
I've only ever walked by myself.
