I'm planning my time in Rome. How long does it take to do each of the three walks in Rick's guidebook -- Roman Forum Walk, Dolce Vita STroll, and Night Walk Across Rome?
Dennis, it all depends on your interests,(how much stopping, admiring, inspecting, photgraphing etc along the way) the weather and the crowds. I can easily spend half a day at the Forum alone.
It depends very much on how long you tarry at each sight. Maybe a rough average of 2 to 3 hours for the Night Walk. Maybe 2 hrs for Dolce Vita Stroll. Someone could do these two in half the times given above, by walking fast and not stopping for long. Or you could take twice as long, if you were in the mood to explore.
A side note: Before visiting the Roman Forum, you should investigate its history. Knowing what you are seeing will improve (and lengthen) your visit - otherwise, it's just a bunch of stones and columns. Also, be sure to wear good walking shoes, to navigate those big Forum cobblestones.
A hearty 2nd on reading up a bit on the Roman Forum walk - or if you prefet, stopping at each spot and reading about it right there. We used RS's audio downloads and there was tons of information to listen to. It WAS a bit hard finding each spot he mentioned -had to really look around at first. Between Palatine HIll and the Forum, we spent probably 4-5 hours. We did stop a lot to gaze, to listen, take pictures and soak the atmosphere in. Also did the Night Walk EVERY night we were there ! That would depend on where you were staying - we were only 2 blocks from Piazza Navonna, so began there and soon found our way effortlessly all the way to the Spanish Steps. Probably took 1/2 hr.-45 min. We stopped alot though, again for pics and to sit at Trevi Fountain for awhile.
We spent almost an entire day at the Forum and the Palantine. And in a pouring rain. I kept thinking that if I had been home I'd never have even stepped out of the house. It was incredible.
It totally depends on you Dennis..what are your interests..spend time accordingly..the bottomline is- trip should be enjoyable..no matter how much time u spend at a particular point.
I second the walking shoes. Choose some with ankle support. I twisted my ankle in the Forum coming down a small set of ancient, uneven steps. Not the way to spend a vacation!
