One of the people coming with us to Rome in May has her heart set on seeing the catacombs. To be honest, I've never even thought of seeing them on previous trips.
I understand that there are several different catacombs around Rome. I would appreciate any thoughts on which are the most interesting to see and most accessible via public transportation. I just ordered Rick's 2009 Rome guide from Amazon so should have it in a week. Are there sections in there about the catacombs?

The catacombs and very easy to get to on public transportation and we worth the effort. You RS book will have complete information on getting there
