Roma ristorante

Will be in Rome for a few days in November for a short visit. ANy suggestions regarding eating establishments? Love pizza and husband is vegetarian. We are staying at the B&B At Your Place in Via di Porta, Castello. Looking for reasonable, family type places.

Hello, Camille
we just come back from Rome. We were kind of disappointed about food. Do not expect decent price for good food in Rome - it is very expensive! I can recommend very nice restaurant "La Tavernetta" on via Sistina 147. Good food. Be aware of small cafes, don't be surprise if you will get unfrozen food warmed in microwave. Although for pizza you can find many good places. Good luck!

I have been traveling in Italy for 29 years and I've never had a bad meal. Roma is expensive in relation to other parts of Italy, but not as costly as Venice, I think. I suggest you look for places that are crowded, especially with locals. We generally eat around 7 or 7:30 and Italians usually dine later. You could use RS, Frommer's, or even Michelin to cross reference places. Eating in Italy is one of the reasons people travel there.

DO not skimp on the gelato (ice cream) and the wood fired oven (al forno a legno) for pizza.

Buon viaggio,

RB

Really surprised at elena comments. Maybe she had unusually high expectations. Over the years we have had a couple of so-so meals but in general the small restaurants away from the big plazas have been very good. The food is expensive because the dollar is so weak -- not the Italians' fault.

We have always found very good food by wandering through the different streets away from the main piazzas. We look at the plates that have been served and use our noses to find places and it has served us well. The only time we felt we paid too much for what we were served is when we were just so hungry that we stopped at the first place we came to, usually in the main piazza/tourist areas, that applies to most of the cities we've visited. Most places in Rome have the menus posted so you can see what they offer and the prices before you sit down.

Thank you evereyone. As usual, I can depend on this helpline for good advice. This is our second trip to Italy. On the first trip, we did not have a "bad meal," even in Venice! We are staying in the Cast'Angelo area in Rome. I'm hoping the b&b owner will have some recommendations for us.

Another question, we will be going to Venice via Eurostar. In booking on-line with RailEurope, it is way too expensive. SHould I wait until I arrive in Rome to make reservations or would I be cutting it too close?

Oops! Sorry about the train question. Went to the "Transportation" section of the helpline and had my question answered.

I will pass on a tip from my brother, an academic who has lived in Rome a number of times for a semester or year. When in an area where he doesn't know the restaurants, he peers in windows. When he sees one with a lot of priests or nuns among the clientele, that's his choice. When we've been with him, it's always worked out well.

Hi Camille,

Cul de Sac is a restaurant we really enjoyed in Rome. Great wine selection, pastas, soups, and salads! It's at Piazza di Pasquino, 73
00186 Roma (Lazio), Italy

Not too far from the Pantheon.

We at the BEST PIZZA EVER at the Cucina Romana da Dino restuarant a few blocks from the Termini Station. OH my....quattro fromagio pizza...to have one more bite!! That alone will bring me back to Rome! Restuarant is a bit old and tired looking, prices were great....menu food was OK, pizza was AWESOME! If you are near the termini station, check it out! You won't be disappointed! Check out trip advisor...i posted some pizza pics on there.

Maybe Elena went to Rome, New Jersey by mistake! Or, perhaps she ate her meals in Rome from the Termini Station? I have had plenty of good meals in New York City that came out of a glass case and were warmed in a microwave. Nothing wrong with that. I've never encountered microwaved food in Rome, however. Any place that has people waiting out front for a table is the place to be. These restaurants will usually want a reservation, and you will probably need to make one a day in advance, since table service and turnover is slower in Italy as they don't just eat, they dine.
