What exactly is the difference between these two passes? We are going to Italy at the end of March and I am going to buy one or the other.
If you plan on staying in the city of Rome than the RomaPass is best. The Roma+Piu pass covers transport and entry to Tivoli and other trains within the province of Lazio - including the slow train to da Vinci/Fiumicino airport from Trastevere Station & Tibertina but NOT the Leonardo Express train.
Here is the web site for the Rome passes.

The Più pass includes more transportation options as well as more museums that it covers. It is 5 euros more. Both passes offer free entrance for the first two museums you use and then a discounted entrance for any others you go to, They are both good until midnight on the third day. There are two different cards, lone for the museums and one for the transportation.
If you use the passes for the Galleria Borghese and the Colosseo/Palatino as your first two museums, then the pass almost pays for itself.

As a family of four we used the Roma Pass and thought it worked perfectly. We used it mainly for the museums rather than the transportation as we really enjoyed just walking all over town and taking in the people, views etc The subway really is not that great and does not readily access the sites with the exception of the coloseum where there is a station just across the street.
We used our Roma Pass for the Coloseum, the forum, and Castel St. Angelo (Hadrian's Mausoleum: Castle St. Angelo)- which by the way my kids loved this place too(I believe 9 & under free for Romapass)
As far as free goes - the pantheon is free and amazing and circus maximus is free and most churcehs are free as well. We walked into every one we saw and were in awe of them. A few churches even had an underground tour where you could see them built on older temples which was quite amazing and a nominal donation. Also the spanish steps, trevi fountain etc are free. You just meander around take in Roma!
