Roma Pass / Transit passes / kids

I am going to Rome for 3 days in July with my husband and 3 kids. My dilemma is to buy the Roma Pass or not. If I did, it would be for the three days. Not sure, to be honest, if we'd really ever end up going to another museum to make it worthwhile. Plan on doing the Vatican (not covered) and the Coloseum and various other things, but I figured one day to get used to the time change, one day for Vatican and one day for Colloseum. Now, my kids can get in to the Coloseum for free. I guess my question is, seeing as I'd have to buy regular tickets for them to use transit, would that just be better for us as well? I couldn't find a youth fare for transit. Sorry if this didn't really make sense. :)

If the colosseum is the only site you will see the Roma pass will not pay for itself. You can just buy a 3 day transit pass if you will be using transit for 3 days. That may depend on where you are staying in relation to the sites you will go to. Rome transit is free for under 10 years old.

I see that none of your kids are under 10 (they're 17, 15, 12) so public transit will be full fare for all 5 of you, and the Roma pass and /Rome transport passes/tickets do not cover the airport.

You might look at purchasing "BIT REGENERATION limited edition" packs of 10 tickets for € 14,00, which would be a small savings of € 1 over 10 individually purchased €1.5 BIT tickets (€ 15). One pack would cover all 5 of you for two individual journeys, and some switching of transport modes is possible within 100 minutes of validation depending on what form of transport you're taking. For instance, you can switch from Metro line A to B at Termini as long as you don't go outside of the turnstyles. Always keep hold of your validated tickets until your journey is completed.

You can find info on the Rome ATAC site under "Tickets and Passes". I'd give you the link to the exact page but the website is a little temperamental and won't let me do that.

But Rome is a terrific city to walk so I recommend seeing as much of it on foot as possible! We've felt the need to use public transport very few times over our visits, and have gone for as long as a week with just a few BIT tickets tucked away in case we pooped out somewhere.
