Hello,
I got the Rick Steves Rome 2017 guidebook for Christmas. I'm so happy! :) Rick keeps saying, "The combo-ticket is valid for two consecutive days, but once you use the ticket for either the Colosseum or the Forum/Palatine Hill, you can't reenter that sight (even the next day)." I'm considering getting the Roma Pass and visiting the Colosseum and Palatine Hill one day and then the Roman Forum the next. I know the Roma Pass covers all three sites. I'm wondering if this rule also applies to the Roma Pass. I hope my question makes sense. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Colosseum is considered 1 site.
Forum and Palatine Hill=1 site
The Forum, Palatine AND Colosseum together are counted as 1 single attraction when using either a ticket or the Roma Pass.
With a ticket or the Roma Pass, you are allowed to visit all three attractions on the same day, or the Colosseum on one day and the Forum/Palatine on the next (or the other way around). What you can't do is split visits to the Palatine/Forum: they must be done together as one is accessed from the other inside the security perimeter.
Essentially, you'll be using your pass in place of a "combined entry ticket", and here's what the Roma Pass website states:
" 2.10 When the ticket used for a combined entry is valid for more than a day, can it be used during the validity of the Card?
Yes. One of the museums included in the combined entry arrangement can be visited on the first day that the Roma Pass 72 Hours and/or Roma Pass 48 Hours are activated. Then the other sites included in the combination can be visited during the remaining time.
In example, with the admission ticket to the Colosseum, the three sites included in the entry can be visited on two different days (within 36 hours). Therefore, if the Colosseum is chosen either as one of the first two sites visited for free.... then the archaeological area of the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill can be visited on the following day, as long it falls within the cardโs period of validity. In the meantime, the card can be used to visit other sites of your choice.
PLEASE NOTE: the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill are located in the same archaeological area and count as one admission, therefore if you use the pass to get in once, it cannot be used again for the same site/area (see also FAQ 2.5)."
Clear as mud? :O)
LOL yes, hard to explain....but I got into all 3 sites in one day with my Roma Pass.
First Colosseum, then across the street and into Palatine Hill, then we walked outside of the area and had lunch..... then walked into the Forum and waived our Roma Passes - no one really checked it.
Interesting, Frances, as I know we couldn't do that with a ticket, and the info above clearly states that's not allowed with the pass.
2 years ago I used the Romapass for these sites. I went to the side entrance of the Roman forum off of via dei Imperiali (something like that). I was issued a two day combo. ticket. I just used the combo. ticket. I did the Roman Forum and Colosseum one day. Then, I did the Palatine Hill the next day and went back for a second look at the forum. The forum and palatine hill had the same entrance. The Colosseum has a separate entrance.
Apparently some of the entry personnel have been inconsistent as the Forum/Palatine has been grouped as a single site for long time, even though you can access them through either of two separate entrances. Even the Coopculture official ticketing site states:
"The Colosseum/Roman Forum/Palatine and current exhibitions ticket is valid for two consecutive days from the date of first use and includes entrance for each of the two sites."
That said, I did some digging in past threads and see mention that if you try to enter Forum/Palatine through a different entrance the 2nd day than you did on the day before that it's occasionally allowed. It's not a given, though, so if you really want to see both - and it makes the most sense to do them both at one time - I don't know as it's a risk I'd take.
Those two entrances are:
Roman Forum: Largo della Salara Vecchia 5/6
Palatine Hill: Via di San Gregorio 30
Interesting. Thank you for looking into that. I'll take the safer route and visit both sites at the same time.
