Is the Roma Pass worthwhile for 2 days in Rome & what is a reasonably priced tour for seeing Rome at night?
I would pay for the Roma Pass just to skip the line to get into the Colosseum! When walked past about 2 hours of line with our pass it paid for itself right there in my opinion!
One place to get a Roma Pass is the Termini, the main train station. Rick Steves’ book says to get the pass at the Tourist Information Station at Termini. It was very hard to find. All the signs have you going in circles. Everyone you ask tells you to go to track 24. The Tourist Information booth is next to track 24 but it is inside a “mall” about half way down the track. Just keep walking through the mall. There are no signs on the outside of it telling you where to go in. Very confusing!
There is no reason to get the Roma Pass just to skip the line. You can purchase your tickets (combo ticket for Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill) on-line, or you can purchase them at the Palatine Hill office where there is usually no line (at least, according to RS).
We purchased our tickets on-line. They're good for a 2-day period, open times, for the 3 sites. You print them out and present them at the turnstile. It couldn't be any easier.
For us, the Roma Pass was not worth it. But, we did not go to the Borghese Gallery and we did not use public transportation much. We walked everywhere, except we took a bus to get to the Appian Way/Catacombs.
What website did you use to book your tickets? That sounds great about open tickets.
Try this.
You might want to factor in how much you expect to use the public transportation in Rome during your stay, i.e. the Metro and the city buses. In our case, our hotel was a fair distance away from most of Rome's main attractions, so we used public transportation several times a day. Between that and the ability to bypass the lines at the Colosseum and the Forum, the Roma Pass felt like a good deal for us.
