We would like to purchase but as I map out our plans it would require we go out of our way to Termini to purchase . Does anyone know if we could purchase at airport the week before we head to Rome?
Also exactly what is the discount, I assume it might vary, but in general?
I think it is worth it but we are only there for 2 1/2 days.

The difference in cost is 36E for the 3-day pass and 28E for the 2-day pass. The savings depend on what you were planning to do during your time in Rome.
You don't need to go to the termini to get one. Beside the list above, any of the sites that honor the pass will also sell them.
The discount is the reduced rate at each site. The cost depends on the site but it can be up to 50%.
The only way to know if the pass is worth it is to do the math. If your entry fees will cover the cost of the pass then it's worth it. If not, just prepurchase entry tickets to avoid the lines and save the money.
