Hi! First trip to Italy in June. Very excited. Looking for specific information about road conditions driving from Rome into Vasto. I have heard that there are narrow, single lane roads with two-way traffic near Vasto. Is this true? Are there alternative ways to go that might take longer, but are easier/safer? And do these roads cut through the mountains? Has anyone had experience driving on these roads that they could share? Just looking for specific info re the roads.
It this a joke? Who told you that? It's all on a 4 to 6 lane divided freeway, and then, after the freeway exit, maybe for the last 5+ miles, you might be on two lane regular highways. Obviously there might be country roads that are narrow somewhere (we have them even here in California), but unless you choose to drive on one, you can get to Vasto on roads that are at least 2 lane wide. Just be aware that sometime the GPS navigator might send you through crazy routes. Just follow the signs to Vasto after you exit the freeway at Vasto Nord exit. Just be aware that in Italy there are a lot of roundabouts, and, since in the US there are few of those, if you are not familiar with them, make sure you know how to proceed. In a roundabout the cars which are already in the roundabout have the right of way, while the cars that are about to enter one, must yield to the cars already inside (there will be a 'yield' sign before you enter also). Just familiarize yourself driving in one, so that you don't end up like Chevy Chase in the European Vacation movie.
