Hi there, I'm flying down to Rome next week with family and after we're done with Rome, would like to drive thru Umbria with a stop somewhere where there are no city lights, no pollution et al before we head onto Venice from where we dump the car and head back to Paris via the Artesia, I'd really like help here as to an appropriate route from Rome to Venice (preferably scenic countryside roads) and a suitable pitstop for the night..
Thx
I asked a somewhat similar question and received some very helpful suggestions that might interest you. Here you go. All of these tips sound good to me. Have a great trip. http://www.ricksteves.com/graffiti/helpline/index.cfm/rurl/topic/71693/umbria-minus-orvieto--assisi.html
viamichelin.com is a good resource for planning Europe road trips.
A1 outta Rome, SS675,SS3bis,E45,A14,A13,A4 into Venice. Have never driven through that area but would think the SS675/3bis would give you some decent country scenery and takes you to Perugia and Assisi.
Many thanks Otarridie, Kent, Ron, I feel more 'equipped' now!
Ciao..
And if you pass by Assisi, you might as well go to Gubbio, then San Marino is on your route to Venice (go to the post office to get the San Marino stamp in your passeport ;) then SS16 to Ravenna (nice place) go on the coast up to the Pomposa Abbey (a must)
and you almost at Venice at this point. Ciao !
I would just add a caution to Michaels suggestion.....SS16 is more scenic and will bring you by those great areas to see but if you're looking to make time to Venice I would stick to the autostrada. SS16 can get back up with beach traffic pretty bad at certain times of the day and you'll be going through alot of little towns.
