Is traveling the SS1 along the coastline from Livorno to Rome, a scary road? Should I just stick with the autostrada E35. Comments please

What do you mean by scary? The E80 (SS1 - via Aurelia) is almost all a 4 lane divided freeway which is actually free (no toll).
The speed limit is however only 90 km/h (slightly above 55 mph), except for the portions where you might be on the E80/A12 (toll autostrada) , where the speed limit is higher.
There might be some stretches north of Tarquinia where the SS1 highway is still a two lane highway. I think the speed limit goes down to 70 km/h in that portion. I'm not sure however, maybe it's all finished and all 4 lane by now. I haven't driven it in some years.
