Ristorante reservations

For 8 persons traveling together in Sept/Oct, how far in advance do I book evening meals for Siena, Venice and Rome? I haven't been back for a few years. Better to phone or email? Thank you fellow travelers

As a general rule, I call (or stop by if in the area) the prior evening to reserve for lunch and early lunch hour to reserve for dinner. That works most of the time, but maybe add a day for a group of 8. There are a few very popular restaurants such as Armando al Pantheon in Rome where longer in advance would be better, and there are some restaurants that don't accept reservations at all. If there's a restaurant where you simply must dine, then maybe email them a week or so before you depart for your trip.
