I see that when I buy the Cinque Terre Card for access to the hiking trails that this also gives me access to the Riomaggiore elevator. Has anyone been up the elevator? Is it a worthwhile view? Does anyone know what time they shut down the elevator for the night? We wanted to go at sunset to see the view, is this possible? Thanks!
According to the link below, it does. Or, it's a whole .5E. The card also covers unlimited train rides (2nd class) on the trains from La Spezia to Levanto. The elevator is in the train station. http://www.visitingeu.com/western-europe/italy/category/riomaggiore
I have not taken the elevator, but did stay in Riomaggiore at a hotel at near the top of the town several years ago. The view is nice. Hopefully another post can answer your specifics. If you like to hike, I think the best Cinque Terre views are in the upper trail between Corniglia and Vernazza. I've got some nice pictures of Corniglia taken from that trail. Good luck.
Hi Michelle. We took the elevator. As I recall, it is just a way to avoid having to walk all the way up the street to the top of town. Handy but not a huge difference if you don't mind walking. The view is nice; there are a couple of benches at the top of town where I could sit for hours. Enjoy your trip!!!
As Bob said- this elevator moves you from the train station up to street level- no scenic views, but functional.
I stayed in Riomaggiore last summer. It was my favorite of the towns. Not as touristy as the others, very quiet "workaday town". In fact, in the mornings I got up early 6am to run along the streets up to where the elevator lets you off. It's both beautiful in the morning and evening. I'm not sure what time the elevator runs, though. Unfortunately. The walk up is not difficult at all, I think it just makes it "easier/quicker".
Thank you all for your input. I really appreciate it!
