Riding Trains in Italy

I will be travelling with my husband and three teenagers in Italy in July. We are interested in taking the train to each of our destinations. I understand about the pass we can get for all of us and save money.
HELP - what I need help with is finding a map. Rick Steves has one but I think that is just the major stops. I know there are other stops. Does anyone know how I can get that information? (for example we were told that for one place we are staying the train stop is Castiglione del Lago)

Karen, first, you will not save money with a Eurail pass in Italy. I've done dozens and dozens of comparisons and the pass doesn't win. You are up against two factors 1) if you ride any train class other than the local Regionale or IC train, you will pay a reservation fee. For the ICPlus trains, its 5Euro. For all of the Eurostar-class trains, its 15E-20E extra. 2) for the local Regionale trains, you can indeed hop on without an extra cost but the ticket prices are so low, the pass doesn't make sense. For example, the fare from Florence to Castiglione del Lago is 8.20 Euro. Many runs are under 10Euro-12Euro. Further, if you intend to travel to the Amalifi Coast, the private train there does not accept the pass. Neither do the SITA buses that travel the coast or the ferries.

Where are you intending to travel in Itay? If you get too rural, you will possibly have travel on buses. Passes are no good on the local buses.

To answer your question, I've never seen a detailed map of the Trenitalia stops. I believe that there is a very thick Thomas Cook book that describes train runs in Europe but I've never seen it.

Again, where are you going in Italy? We can attach the train schedules.

Larry is right that you won't save money with a pass.

As for finding stations, there is a way to do it that requires a little work. First, go to the trenitalia page at http://www.trenitalia.com/trenitalia.html It's in italian, but don't worry, I'll explain what to do.

First, click on "In Regione". Next, click on the region on the left side you're interested in. You can find regions on any map that shows all of Italy. Then after you've clicked on the region, click on " Servizi in Stazione
" and you'll see a table listing the names of all the train stations in that region (and the services offered).

Click on "Vedi l’elenco completo delle stazioni servite da Trenitalia" and you'll get a more detailed listing that gives the street address (Indirizzo) and city (Comune)
