rick steves italy 2015 guide book questions.

i just got the 2015 edition of the italy guide book and had a few questions. im looking through the accomodation sections in each of the cities i plan on visiting and noticed that the # of beds are labeled as follows: Sb, D, Db, Tb and so on. now im guessing that the difference between D and Db is that D means one double bed (primarily used by couples) and Db means two beds (whatever size they may be). my concern is that ill be traveling with my brother and would prefer to have separate beds. also any additional information of tips would be very much appreciated, i plan on visiting the following places: prague, vienna, venice, cinque terre, lucca, florence, siena, pescara, bari, sorrento and rome.

Thank you

arms,

The legend will be listed in the book somewhere. In the 2012 edition, it's on page 22 under the heading of "Sleep Code". Some examples.....

  • Sb - Single room with private bathroom with toilet and shower or tub.
  • Db - Double or Twin room with private bathroom with toilet and shower or tub. In many cases, the double beds consist of two twin beds pushed together. If you notify the hotel that you want separate beds, they should provide two beds.
  • Ds - Double or Twin room with private shower or tub only; the toilet is down the hall.

There were some recent threads here regarding tipping, but I'd have to search to find them.

Buon Viaggio!

The big letter is the bed arrangement and number of people accommodated in the room. If there is no little "b" or little "s" after it that means it is shared bath facilities. If there is a little "b" it means ensuite facilities with a bathtub or shower bath, if it is a little "s" it means ensuite facilities with a shower cubicle or other shower facility like a wet room, with no bathtub.

That is the same throughout the RS books regardless of country. There is a little paragraph explaining usual lodging customs in the area at the beginning of the sleeping section.
