Rhodes and Sicily

cruising[INVALID]one day only in each. Not in Rick Steves travel guide. Any thoughts on best things to see and do? Yes, I know that one is in Italy and one is in Greece (islands). Haven't been to Rhodes in 40 years!!!

Susan, cruisecritic.com is a good place to take your question. Click on to "ports" on the orange band at the top of the screen.

I agree you will get better responses on Cruisecritic.com. I have not been to Sicily, but Rhodes is an easy walk. The ship docks right beside the old city. Wander through it, tour the Grand Masters Palace. Admire the yachts in the harbour, see the windmills on the breakwater, shop the stores for silks and leathers. Bargain! {articularly for multiples. I buy ties and belts there. My wife and sister have bought shoes, purses and change purses.

Susan, from Messina many will take the train or bus to Taormina. There is a great amphitheater there. There are other option, Mt. Etna is one. Definitely check out cruisecritic.com, lots of hints on how to do different ports on your own. For a cruise, we look at the ship offered excursions and then pick out the pieces we like the most and try to find a way to do them ourselves.

Susan, pick up a copy of the Sicily Lonely Planet guide book, and do some reading about he area where you will be landing. You may land in Messina, Sicily. If that is the case, you can take the train/bus to Taormina, or the ship may offer a tour to the volcano Mt Etna.

Rhodes is very easy to just wander the old town area. Some go out to Lindos as well. For Sicily, which town?

Siracusa and the hill towns in the area all the way up to Agrigento!
