Revised Itinerary Sept 2025

After some feedback from this group, I have revised my trip. Any feedback would be appreciated. Please note I will have a car.

1- Arrive in Palermo late, pick up rental car - head to Castellammare Del Golfo stay night

2- Castellammare

3- Castellammare

4- Leave Castellammare late afternoon head to Palermo

5- Palermo

6- Palermo

7- Leave Palermo - Stay a night in Cefalu ( or just one more night in Palermo and do a day trip out of Palermo. Figured breaking the drive up would help if I stayed in cefalu

8- Leave Cefalu, head to Taormina

9- Taormina

10- Taormina

11- Leave Taormina - Return Rental Early AM in Catania, Fly out Catania

In between I do have some day trips / boat tours in mind, but I think logistically this would make sense. Airfare is booked so I can't change my fly in. (Trapani over Palermo)

Would you recommend staying a night in Cefalu or just visiting it on the way out of Palermo and just arrive in Taormina later.

What do you plan to do with the car during your Palermo stay?

Whatever you do, DO NOT drive in Palermo, traffic is horrendous!

Do you really need the car once you leave Palermo?

Cefalú is an easy one hour train ride from Palermo.

If you’re traveling from Palermo to Cefalú and then to Taormina, consider returning the rental car at Palermo’s airport and then take the train, or bus, into the city.

You can then take the bus (or taxi) from Taormina to the Catania Airport.

Sicily is wonderful but agree with Priscilla, do not take a car into Palermo. Our taxi drive scared the heck out of us, driving fast in a bus lane, etc.

We did not go to Cefalu, but Monreale was the highlight of our entire trip and the cathedral is amazing. We happened to be there during a wedding and the cathedral choir along with the organ and the ceremony was phenomenal. We are Catholic so could understand most of the ceremony. But even not being religious, it’s not to be missed.
