Revised 3-week Switzerland/Italy Itinerary- Input Appreciated!

Thank you to everyone who has given input regarding my initial itinerary planning and questions. Have it narrowed down to 2 main options (open to tweaking of course).

My main “dilemma” (which I guess is a good thing), is it’s my first trip to Europe and I’m debating whether I can fit both the Alps and the Mediterranean. While Italy is my main focus, I also would love to have a contrast to Italian culture and Switzerland just seems completely incredible. We also probably won’t be doing major traveling for at least several years after this, so I’m trying to make the most of it. Also, if I absolutely had to cut the Mediterranean seaside village or Switzerland due to time or whatever, what do you think would be the bigger loss? We would be going in the last week of June into July, love beautiful scenery, and enjoy a nice balance of leisure/wandering time and some planned/busy time. Thanks for your help!

Option 1:

Lauterbrunnen 3 nights (day trip to Lucerne)

Chur- 1 night (just staying over to do Bernina express)

Either Tirano or Lugano- 1 night (just to break up travelling to Levanto)

Levanto 3 nights (I know CT is completely overrun in July, but looking at the websites, it seems that Levanto might not be as bad- especially during the weekdays when cruise ships aren’t scheduled there. We don’t mind crowded- we’re from NY lol- but seeing the pics of CT completely swamped is a little much. Thoughts on Levanto?)

Florence- 4 nights (when we leave Florence, we will pick up a car to drive to pienza and stop at Siena for the day before continuing onto Pienza)

Pienza 3 nights

Orvieto- 1 night

Rome- 3 or 4 nights (if I do 4 nights, I wouldn’t do the overnight at Orvieto- just visit for half to a full day, drop off the car, and continue onto rome via train)

Option 2:

Arrive In Zurich in AM, head right to Lucerne

Lucerne- 3 nights (visit Mt. Rigi or Mt. Pilatus)

Lauterbrunnen- 3 nights (obviously this Itinerary would have me skip the Bernina express, but would do one or two of these walks while in Lauterbrunnen: https://voyagista.com/2013/10/07/switzerland-hiking-bernese-oberland-top5/ )

1 travel day/night: Leave late morning for Milan; ON in Milan; Leave on 8 am train to arrive in Levanto by 11am

Levanto- 3 nights; leave late morning/early afternoon for Florence

Florence- 4 nights

Pienza 3 nights

Rome- 3 nights

*One additional change to option 2 is that we can also just spend 4 nights in Lauterbrunnen with a daytrip to Lucerne, and use the days that I originally had in Lucerne and add an extra night in Rome and Florence.

Levanto is a good choice. I don't know what activities you intend, but Pienza is very small. I can't imagine spending 3 days if your only intention is seeing the town - it's more like 3 hours.

Thanks for the input Mike! Glad to hear Levanto is doable in the summer :) As for Pienza, we wanted a smaller, rustic, a little more "off the grid" place to base some other day trips. I figure with all of the other crowded days, the space might be nice. One of the days will be spent driving around to do some sort of farm-to-table/culinary experience (like maybe a farm tour and cheesemaking kind of thing) and winetasting (don't worry- we literally just taste, and my husband is good at being DD), and we will probably visit another hill town on another day. Do you have a suggestion for another place that's also kind of off the beaten path, but has enough to do in the town itself and would serve as a solid base to explore Tuscany?

I'm thinking skip Lucerne and go straight to Lauterbrunnen for 3 nights. This area will give you gorgeous alpine scenery and 3 nights allows for ample time to hike both sides of the valley. Plus, if there is a bad weather day, you could take a day trip into Bern or Lucerne. On leaving Lauterbrunnen, train down to lake Geneva and stay in the Montreux area for a taste of the beautiful lakeside scene for a couple/three nights.
In any event, I would free up at least one more day for Rome. It's an experience not to be done quickly. Take time there to see as much as you can. Every time you turn a corner there is another fantastic sight. Check Rick's guide book on Rome for good areas to explore.

I would agree with spending more time in Rome as compared to Florence. Rome is one of the few European cities that I've been to a number of times, yet there's still more to see (and places I want to revisit). Florence is great too, but I don't feel so compelled to revisit it as much. But of course, if you like Renaissance art, Florence is your place.

I would also agree about Pienza. While beautiful, it's really small. If you want more variety of cafes and restaurants for in the evening, consider Montalcino or Montepulciano.

I wouldn't skip either of your major country sites. We had a similar itinerary a few years ago; it worked well. We had been to Lauterbrunnen/Wengen, Florence, Siena & Rome two days each on Rick Steves Tours.

Flew into Zurich & took the trains immediately to Wengen (at Lauterbrunnen but higher altitude)
Wengen - 4 days
Stresa, Italy - 2 days
Florence - 1 day
Siena - 3 days
Grosseto - 2 days
Rome - 4 days

I'm not as big of fan of Florence, so I would add a day to Lauterbrunnen or Orvieto on your 1st option or give it to Rome on your 2nd option.

I like the sounds of option 1. If you can add some time onto Rome, do it! We stayed for 3 nights in late June (2012) and wish we had more time. Also, be sure to rent a place with AC! Lesson learned for us.

Stay in Wengen. The views are to die for. Plus it's car free. Magical
