Returning rental car in Catania, Sicily

Hi all, I am flying into Palermo and will be picking up a rental car in Palermo when I leave the city. At the airport, I am guessing this is the easiest to get on the autostrada and get out of the city to head to Segusta and Erice. Or is downtown OK to save the half hour commute back out to the airport?
Two weeks later I will be flying out of Catania. The day before leaving should I head to the airport or the train station to return the car? Next morning I can bus or train back to the airport to fly out. Which is easier? Rick's book mentions taxis (18 euros) and buses but not the train to go to the airport.
Thanks

k2wilde, that's because there is no train to the airport in Catania. I know, you get used to thinking there should be. Taxi is fine; your hotel can arrange.

I would return the car on arrival in Catania as you won't need it there. Parking and rental costs could easily be higher than the taxi.

A lot of buses heading from Catania to other towns seem to stop at the airport on the way. If you happen to be staying a short walk from the bus area (there wasn't a "station" as such in 2015), you could save some money by taking a bus. I have no idea whether there is a dedicated airport-only bus.

No need for a car in either Palermo or Catania. Return the car at Catania airport the day before departure. The airport is very close to downtown. If you didn’t want to stay in downtown Catania, there is at least one hotel right by the airport.
