Returning Rental Car Around Gaiole in Chianti or Driving to Rome

After a few days in Florence, my wife and I will be renting a car (most likely picking up at the airport) to drive to Gaiole in Chianti, where we will be staying for 5 days and using as a base to explore the area. We will then be traveling to Rome. We had initially planned to return the car somewhere around Gaiole in Chianti (maybe Siena?) and take a train to Rome. If we were to go with this option, where would be the best town to drop off a car and take the train? A subsequent thought would be just to drive to Rome, but I don't want to drive in the city and drop off a car. Does it make sense to drop off a car at the airport (or another location) and head into the city via taxi? We will be staying in the Monti neighborhood. Sorry for the long question and any thoughts and recommendations are welcomed!

Hertz in Orvieto is a favorite drop off location for rental cars. You'll be in Rome Termini in 70 minutes by train, and Hertz' office is just across the street from the train station.

It's just 90 minutes driving from Siena down to Orvieto--all 4 lane/expressway. And it's an absolutely favorite hill town to spend the night in.
Florence city center Hertz locations will always be cheaper than the airport, and one is on Sansovino--2 miles from the train station. I always try to avoid airport rentals due to additional tariffs, taxes or charges--worldwide--vs. pickups at city locations. Train stations also often have additional fees. I will turn a car into an airport at no additional charges, however.
