We're in the very early stages of planning a trip to Italy and the most logical route for us is to visit cinque terre last to avoid back tracking (starting in Naples). I'm looking at Milan and Genoa as places to return from. Not interested in sight seeing in either place, just looking for the most convenient. Any good reason to prefer one over the other? Or a third place to consider?

Pisa or Florence is closer. Milan Malpensa is about a hour bus ride north from Milano Centrale train station.

Thanks Ron, I just looked at Pisa and airfare/connections and I thought they looked pretty good. So I think we will plan on flying home from Pisa.
