Returning car rental outside of Rome (from South)

Hi - we are flying into Naples and driving down to Massa Lubrense area (just south of Sorrento) to see Amalfi Coast/etc. We will go to Rome as our next destination and I don't want to return the car in Rome. Is there a town on the way toward Rome that is easy to navigate to return a rental car, and then take the train into Rome? I don't really want to return the car to Naples, would prefer a smaller town that will be easier to navigate a rental car return.

Thanks, Jen

Have you considered returning the car at Naples airport? That is probably easier to navigate than the city centre, and an easy bus ride into town to catch the train to Rome.

Check if you can drop the car off at Afragola TAV, the suburban station used only by High Speed Trains. If it is possible, return the car there and get on a bullet train to Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina.

Thank you for the suggestions! For the Naples airport, I wasn't sure how easy it would be to navigate back to the airport, as I know some travelers have posted issues with other airports of major cities. I like the idea of a suburban drop off, so will definitely look into Afragola TAV. Thanks!

I hadn't known about Dario's suggestion. I love it. It is right off the A1. What could be more convenient?

The AVIS office in Rome used to be under the Villa Borghese, trust me you don't want to deal with that

There are no rental car locations at the Afragola station.
I generally drive into downtown to the Termini station but if you don’t feel up to driving inside a large city, I would consider either Via Tuscolana, where all agencies have an office, or to the Ciampino Airport. Coming from Naples both are convenient from the GRA (Grande Raccordo Anulare, or Great Ring Beltway)

JEN, you can drop the car in Sorrento and take the Circumvesuvian directly to Napoli Centrale about 1H10m.

A possible alternative would be Caserta check Auto Europe to see how close to the station it is to the drop off.

Looks like Caserta has an AVIS right next to train station. That may be the right way to go! Thanks for the tip!

Hello-
No one has mentioned the many ZTL’S ( restricted areas) in Italy-that you cannot drive thru- especially in Rome- do your research and due-diligence or you will wind up being charged thousands of euros years later- and you will also be charged by both the rental agency AND the dept. of transportation office who issues the fines.

If coming from the south, why not drop at the airport? We have dropped at the airport in the past and it was quick and easy.

Ciampino Airport return makes the most sense to me. Easier than going downtown Caserta. Cheaper too. Once you return your car at Rome-Ciampino Airport, you can pick up a taxi to your hotel. I think the flat rate from Ciampino Airport to any place in Rome city center is 30 euro.
