Has anyone returned a car at Terni then traveled by train to Rome? Looking for easiest return option for station in Umbria, preferably Hertz. Thanks in advance!

Yes! We just did that in December. We always use Europcar. They drove us to the train station although they didn't need to.
The outskirts of Terni are vast and not appealing at all, and there was rush hour traffic we weren't expecting, but otherwise it was easy.
We actually took the train from Terni back to Narni where we were staying (very, very nice town) and we went by train to Rome the next day, but we could have used the Terni station.
If Orvieto has a Hertz or other car rental place, that would be even easier.

We returned to Hertz in Spoleto
The office was just a few turns off the highway with a gas station nearby to refill
Train station was just a block or so away- quick walk
Very easy

It depends on where you are staying in Umbria.
Hertz has offices in Perugia, Perugia Airport, Chiusi, Orvieto, Spoleto, Terni
Avis has offices in Perugia, Perugia Airport, Orte, Spoleto, Terni, Chiusi/Città della Pieve
Europcar has offices in Perugia, Perugia Airport, Foligno, Terni, Chiusi

Thanks all, I'm searching on AutoEurope where I normally book but having trouble finding the right combination of car/transmission/rental office near train station. It's weird. Maybe I'll just book direct.
