Returning by car to Venice

We have several options to consider to drop off our rental car so I'm confused. We can return it to, say, Padua, where we'll have rented it 3 days earlier, and take the train in to Piazzale Roma, then onward by vaporetto. Or return the car to the airport and catch the Alilugana which we're doing at the start of the journey and will know how (no parking fee). If we drop it at Piazzale Roma there's a parking fee of about 45 euros. Which is easier/less hectic and/or more economical?

We picked up a rental car at Mestre (which is a 8 minute train ride to the main Sta. Lucia station in Venice). I suppose you could drop off there if your rental company has an office there.

Who is charging you a €45 parking fee to drop the car at Piazzale Roma?

We returned our Hertz rental car there and it cost €24 more than dropping at the airport---cheaper than 3 Alilaguna tix and faster and more pleasant as well. The vaporetto is easy to board there.

Just be careful to observe the speed limit as you cross the causeway---there are three speed cameras and no mercy.
